What the hell is going on??!

We have had a tempestuous couple of months regarding our commits de-committing. Slaps to the face after slaps to the face, nothing but terrible news! I know this chit happens in the recruiting world, especially in January, but this is VERY odd. We've lost some solid recruits and it hurts. Kongbo is the latest debacle. Why? Is Butch telling these kids to go elsewhere? They just all change their mind? Aces up staff's sleeves?

I guess what I am wondering is what gives here? Why the huge slide in recruiting? It really has become alarming and disheartening.

This is fairly typical for most programs.
I agree that it does seem to be a down year for us on the recuiting trail. More recruits than usual seem to be waiting for NSD so we will have to wait and see what comes out of that. Several big powerful names left on the table at this point. It ain't over yet.

I think you guys should give the OP a break.

How many on here have not thought the very same things. Sure, you never said it out loud, put it on paper, or started a thread to let others know how you feel, but you thought it. You felt it.

To lose a number one Juco DL, a number one QB, our DC...We really have not recruited at the highest level that we did in Butch's previous years...

Having said that, I realize that we have a month left, and at least two new coaches coming in to potentially add excitement back into this class.

I feel like our program is now a "tweener". The gloss has worn off a little from our new coach, and we have failed to win any championships thus far. 9-4 isn't bad, and that was a great win in the bowl game, but we really need to win big next year to really get the excitement back to the level we need, in order to get the top recruits.

Hang in there OP. I think most posters are correct. Its likely just another day in recruiting. We'll get through this.

"What the hell is going on??!" is way too dramatic to start such a thread. Just be reasonable and quit trying to attract viewers.

Did not follow him. Did he have a good college career?

He did fairly well. If I'm not mistaken, he may be the one of the, if not the top rated safety this coming draft.

On a side note, while I wanted him to commit to Tennessee instead of Ohio State, missing out on him really didn't hurt us much. TKjr has developed well, Stephen Griffin is touted to be a stud and the possibility of Warrior next year will have us set at safety when it's gonna count the most.

Gitshirt is an incredibly disrespectful and offensive term... and it is one of the funniest things I've ever read on VN. I can't wait for it to start being widely used by other fanbases.

It is almost as good as the Gary thread.

I looked on one of the recruiting websites last night (I think Rivals) and none of our coaches are even in the top 100 for "top recruiters". Lots of schools have several in the top 100. I think Thig was in the 130s going off memory. This is not a good year thus far. I hope it turns around, but we are usually in a much better position with Butch at this time of year. And the number of recruits that we can take is NOT the problem as too many folks on here incorrectly indicate. Some of the top schools in the rankings have around the same numbers as we have thus far.

I agree with you. SOMETHING has gone awry with the 2016 class. You cannot consistently compete in the SEC if you can't pull in top 10 classes year in and year out. That crap eventually caught up with Fulmer. With our program's trajectory trending upward the way it has, it doesn't make sense that our ranking is so low. Hell, KENTUCKY is currently ranked ahead of us for God's sake!

I love how the folks who don't follow recruiting come out to complain about the class ranking a month before signing day...

Welcome to 21st century recruiting. If Kongbo wants to play elsewhere, let him. We want players who want to be here, not those who don't. This kinda stuff happens every year. We had some of this action in 2014 and 2015. Didn't that work out OK? Trust us, by NSD, it will all work out. Have a little faith, and prepare your boomage.

Agree 100%. I hope we can make some big gains up to signing day. Maybe these new hires will help.

I remember when Kiffin left. It was complete disarray. All but one coach left the program, except Chaney. Kiffin was trying to get recruits to join him to at USC.
Dooley ended up getting James, Stone, DaRick Rogers & Hunter to come to U.T. and he did it in short notice.
Often there are changes in programs and things seem unsteady for a short period, but we will come out of this in better shape than you may think when it is all said and done.

I agree with you. It's a bit concerning what has happened on the recruiting trail lately. I can't figure why some on here are giving you a hard time about this post. I guess there's a few on here, that forgets that this is a message board to give opinions and discuss TN athletics. Calling others out about they're post, and telling them to go cheer for other schools because they disagree with an opinion, is childish and down right ridiculous! Don't worry about it bro. Go Vols!

There's no way that Butch could keep going like he was, non-stop, for the past two years. Even Butch needs sleep. Brick by brick worked for a while but you gotta keep your script up to date...like Bama, Ole Miss, or Auburn...come here and get boat loads of money.
PS. The new TE coach will be worth his weight in gold recruiting Florida...hide and watch...:salute:
GO VOLS!

There's no denying that this class isn't shaping up to what we wanted. Excuses can be made for anything including recruiting, but the fact of the matter is that we didn't have any commits today and haven't had many big commits lately at all.

Idk why people are in such denial saying things like oh well it's bc of coaching changes and this and that, but we've been working on this class all year, and it's barely top 25. And what about all the other teams that are pulling top recruits with ongoing coaching changes. I don't care what some of yall say, this worries me.

As of right now, we barely have a top 25 class and it's not looking like we have any big recruits on the radar other than Nigel Warrior. I have a feeling some of you will be very disappointed when after NSD, it's still a 20-25 ranked class, and that is not good enough to win the SEC or national titles.

Edit: And I keep up with recruiting year round even if I don't post often in the RF...doesnt change the fact that I'm still worried ab the current class. I hope we pull out a top 15 class but as of right now, I'm skeptical. I promise you if Bama or LSU had a class ranked where ours is at now, those fans would be worried as well and rightfully so.

Yes, if you don't include curb stomping the #13 team in the country in a bowl game and hiring the last head coach of the Miami Hurricanes to be our TE coach. Among other things.
