If we play zone, it will be repeat of last year.
The problem with our zone is we play it too much…and we don’t adjust! Like anything in football, if you play the same play too often, the other team adjusts, and then, the said play (our zone defense in this case) is no longer effective. Play zone, but mix it up with man, disguise it, blitz, stunt, etc. That all said, no matter which package you use on D, we have to make the QB hurry…send 4, 5, or the kitchen sink…we need their QB to never get comfortable in the pocket! GBO!

My biggest concern is how the Vols allowed the good teams on their schedule last year to totally control time of possession via long, time-consuming drives over and over. In addition to wearing the defense down, it decreased the number of opportunities our offense had by a significant number. Play aggressive defense and bring the heat, Don‘t give this QB time to pick and choose receivers.
In this offensive philosophy, time of possession is an irrelevant statistic.

If we’re hitting chunk plays and scoring TDs, It don’t matter.

Check the ‘22 team’s stats. I don’t think there was more than a couple games where we won TOP.

If we get up fast and force Gunner to play catch-up, we’ll win going away.

I don't want to sound pessimistic but I'll believe we beat UGA when we beat UGA. They will come to Knox with their A game. They have a tremendous talent gap over us. Keys to the game:
* Joey will need to make his progressions way faster.
* Our oline will need to give some time. You can't ask them to hold the blocks long against their pass rush.
* Dline will need to generate some pass rush and control the LOS
* Every inch matters. Every first down matters, grind, grind, grind.
* Limit mistakes. Joey needs to throw the ball away and live for a new down if the play isn't there.
* Keep the penalties to less than 5 for 40 yds

They were having severe meltdowns yesterday during the game against Austin Peay. A lot of them are completely done with Gunner.

They should. Struggling against FCS is never a good sign for the next game. It might not matter later in the season but its a sign that right now you're in a funk.

GA has just matched up better against us in recent years and usually wins by two to three TDs. Loaded with talent and their defense has stymied us lately. We got to have guys make plays and have to put ridiculous pressure on Stockton. They usually shake off any mediocre performances prior to playing us and come into this game ready to play. Our injuries on defense doesn’t help matters. We’re going to have to score probably 28+ pts to have a good crack at winning this game.

But those have all been later in the year. We're getting them early now. I say advantage us. We seem to do better with Georgia early in the season and Florida late in the season. This is why I'm confident in both games this year.

Austin Peay is better than TN? Now that’s a knowledgeable football fan there. Sounds like a few we have on this site.

I don't disagree with you on your second point, but I believe that the OP was referring to GA as 'This team' and not AP. I could be wrong though. It did come from a GA fan...

I understand your viewpoint about ‘22 time of possession and big plays. My big point is that we are getting less possessions on the whole and less productive possessions against very good teams. I certainly didn’t articulate that very well.

The GA fan base has become the most arrogant and obnoxious group in the country. I’d love to see the MFs get a heaping helping of humble pie.
Much of our board acts like this and we don’t have the last years of success that Georgia had. Part of being a fan.

We're going to turn into that Kentucky reporter who rants every year about "can ee just beat this stupid tenn team and their stupid song and stupid colors" if the vols still can't get Kirby lol

They are the most ignorant fanbase of them all. They know nothing about other teams, bunch of smug bastards.

We have some too. Most successful fanbases don't have to care. They also have a lot of loud bandwagon fans right now just like Bama did under Saban. In fact, some of those Bama bandwagoners are likely UGA fans now.

JA has to be great with no mistakes, and we have to be able to weather the depth differences in the 4th. I think it’s a dogfight.

To expect JA to not having any mistakes is probably unrealistic. How we handle the mistakes is huge. Go back and watch the Hendon Hooker fumble in 2022 against Alabama. It looked like Bama was going to walk away with the game after that but we kept fighting. That is the key, to keep fighting.

Question for you, did 2022 Alabama bring their "A" game and do you feel this team is way better than that Alabama team? Tennessee can win these games with Heupel (now the previous turd knocker coaches are questionable if it was possible).

Me too and it’s their a-hole fanbase.

Yep. I hate Alabama, that is a given. But, I can begrudgingly respect them, to a degree.

I'll even concede that some of the old guard UGA fans are tolerable and can even carry a conversation about football. However, by and large their fan base are a bunch of hydrant-p*ssing, leghumping, knuckle-dragging mouth-breathers. They're no better than Gator fans in the 90s.

I’m not saying perfection. But fumbles or ints will be tough to overcome. We just need a solid game from him where we can still be competing in the last quarter. Some here don’t like to acknowledge it, but GA is packed full of 4-5 stars deep into the chart.

To overcome that we have to play near mistake free football. That’s how you beat teams that are better than you.

I went to Athens for the game last year and sat around a bunch of UGA fans. They were pretty great to get along with. I also have some friends that are UGA fans coming to watch game with me. Just like all fanbases, they have the loud, obnoxious internet trolls. Also due to recent success, I think they have stolen some of the Alabama bandwagon base. (I think we are getting some of the band waggoners as well because people are seeing that Tennessee is getting better under Heupel and starting to become a contender).

Possible. UGA recruiting hasn't been as dominant since NIL as you think. (It really isn't that UGA is doing bad, it is that the talent is getting more spread out now). Also Nico was a 5* lol. Not all 5* pan out.

I think this is our best chance to beat them in a while, but I would draw nothing from the Austin Peay game in reference to their offense. They did nothing but run inside zone and wide receiver screens like 98% of their plays. They basically did not want to put anything on film in this game. We need to be able to stop the run, if we can do so, I think we will have a chance. Their defense has played really well so far, although against subpar competition.
