For everyone insisting that was "running up the score" I think that last drive had more to do with "leave my kicker alone so you don't get one in the ear"

He was gonna give Max a chance to score the last point on them

You obviously never played ball. You cannot tell the 2nd and 3rd and 4th stringers to go out and lay down after they spent all spring in the heat and all fall camp in the heat practicing. They earned playing time, not I feel sorry for the other team time. Spurrier said it best, it’s not my job to stop them it’s yours!

You can definitely call run plays and let the clock run at the end of a blowout. That happens hundreds of times every year.

Again, I do not care that we run up the score. Doesn’t bother me at all. But to deny that we are running up the score is just a lie.

Not early in the season it doesn't, not with coaches who have a brain.

Every game snap is super valuable. Every single one. Including trash time. Because your 2nd and 3rd string need that experience. They need to run as much of the play book as you have time to put them through. Pass plays, runs, RPOs, screens, that one option play on page 33 of the play book, everything. As many times as possible.

Because as good as practice reps are, game atmosphere and truly hostile opponent makes trash time waaaaaay better still.

Now, that may not be as true (still true, but just not as important) for a team whose main goal is to get to 6 wins and bowl eligibility. That may not be as true for the program where participation is the main objective.

But the teams chasing championships, hell yeah, it's big.

So for THOSE kinds of teams, teams like ours, it's not running up the score. It's running the playbook to broaden experience and improve depth in the roster. Period.

Scoring does not always == running up the score.

Go Vols!

Again, simple question, how do we get real game experience for our backup QB's if we only let them hand the ball off? They need to be able to run the playbook, I want to see them running the full offense. Makes no sense to me to worry about what others think about us running up the score, while we have no starters in about running our offense so a backup QB is ready should an injury occur. How many here would be going crazy if we did nothing and then had to put in a backup who had done nothing but hand off since spring ball? I know I wouldn't be happy, my guess is not many would be happy and we would all be asking the same question, why weren't they batter prepared.

No, it is not!!!! If we wanted to run up the score, we would leave the starters in !!!! We are just letting the 2's and 3's play football, which is what they came here to do!! We are not a participation trophy school.

How many teams call passes in the final minute of a 32 point game they are winning? Not many. If you are throwing the ball to the end zone when a kneel down will end the game, you are trying to run up the score. You sound like Jimmy Kimmel.

I'm OK with running up the score. They're getting paid to take that beating. Better that than what UT used to get for their money... similar to what UCLA got recently from New Mexico.

But it is more than just running up the score. You put a trick play on film in a game where it can't back fire on you... every opponent has to prepare for that play and every permutation of it. Why not get a live game practice for an on-side kick since you might need it in a competitive game at some point?

I don't think it is just a desire to embarrass a weakling at all. On the other hand... teaching your guys to play with intensity for 60 minutes and not letting up... pays dividends on its own.

Most of what UT does with a lead now is related to developing players or trying things out. Personally I think that is GREAT... not good... GREAT. Fulmer and other past coaches wasted those opportunities. Heupel doesn't.

If the coach is still calling pass and trick plays in the last 2 min of a game, IMO that's running up the score. Other than that you call the same plays for the reserves you would with the starters and let them play.

Only game I remember Heuple intentionally running up the score was against Mzou at home 2-3 yrs ago when Heuple left the starters in and scored a TD with time running out for like 62 points. Him and Drink have never been buddies since then.

If we wanted run up the score you leave Joey in, Star in, Mathews in, etc. We could have scored 90. People complains about attempting to run up the score will complain about backups not getting meaningful snaps.

Or you throw to the end zone up 32 when a kneeldown would kill the clock and end the game. Or you would onside kick up 30 on Kent State. Or you’d have your tight end throw a bomb up 38 on UT Martin. Or you’d call timeout to try to get the ball back with 2 seconds left up 56 against UTEP. Or you’d tell Joe Milton to throw as far as he can in garbage time. You’d do all of those things.
