What Other Message Boards Are Saying: Mizzou Edition

I'm pretty worried about Missouri's high octane offense. I mean did you guys see the numbers they put on Georgia? :mf_surrender:

"Must be misery to be a Vols fan. Lol. See you next week and will happily make fun of you after the game."

"I hope Mizzou brings their A-game...the Viles will likely be rapey."

"I hope Mizzou gives UT a slice of humble pie as a early Thanksgiving gift. Fans and team are getting way to cocky for their own good"

I don't get into the bashing but I admit, I am surprised how many of the other comment boards show an attitude of a multiple championship powerhouse.

How are we getting cocky when everyone thinks Missouris offense is so bad they dont think they can win?

Hansbrough is not a WR.
I know he's not a WR. Did I say different? "Skill players" include the RB's and WR's then sometimes the QB and return specialists.
He is a running back who averages around 5.6 yards per carry and is currently sitting at #9 in the SEC for this statistic.
He's a system player... just like I said. He would struggle to find a role on any other SEC team.

I know you don't feel like we have a very talented team but we have probably the best defense lineman in the SEC playing for us in, Shane Ray. If you're not familiar with him, you'll be a little bit better acquainted on Saturday evening.
Yes. The whole SEC knows about Ray. He's a good football player thriving in a system that makes good DE's look great. Ray has 11.5 sacks right now... 7 came against UK, UCF, Indiana, and Toledo. Versus the SEC... he's third behind Barnett and Maggitt... both Vols.

He's NOT the best DL in the SEC.

FWIW, UT's OL has struggled for much of the year. Dobbs has helped but again MU's system is built around getting DE pressure when they have a down and distance advantage. They bend, don't break then look for the big play when the opponent is behind the chains.

UT like any other MU opponent needs to stay ahead of the chains and run the ball effectively to keep the DE's tight in their rush lanes.

On the opposite side of Mr. Ray we have Markus Golden who was out for the Indiana game and has just recently gotten back to his full health. So, I would think it would be safe to say that we're pretty talented and a majority of SEC teams would like to have a few of our players.
I was specifically talking about your O. Your D does have a couple of good players and some role players... just like it always does.

Our coaching staff does not care about stars when they recruit. They look for players who fit a certain mold, for their style of play. Some of the best defense linemen currently in the NFL played at Mizzou, the coaches do a good job there.

The coaching staff does a good job with what they're able to get. But Mizzou fans are getting a false sense of things. The East has been way down since Mizzou joined the SEC. Just a weird convergence of two traditional powers being at low ebb at the same time. Again, that's not going to last. Jones is recruiting as well or BETTER than Fulmer ever did. I had questions about the coaching but those are progressively being answered.

Enjoy the lull while it lasts. The balance of power in the SEC not that long ago was in the East. Now it is in the West... it will shift again.

I get what you are saying...Mizzou doesn't haul in top flight recruiting classes with 4-5 stars....but to say we are are lacking in talent is a bit of a stretch...we have 20 players on NFL rosters not counting the fringe players you mentioned. Now don't twist this I'm not saying we have Bama,UGA,LSU etc. talent,we don't but we get enough talent and develop it to a high degree to be competitive. And I suspect we always will and we continue to bring in more talent with every class.

I think this Sat. will be a highly competitive game and if I had to bet my house I say tenn. by 7-10 points...but we could pull the upset.

I'd also say Sasser could easily play WR for other Sec programs...he is not a superstar and he wasn't suppose to be ours either But with DGB&Copeland booted and DWhite gimpy for most of the season he has performed well.

Hansbrough would and could play for some Sec teams of course he wouldn't for some of the top teams but he isn't chopped liver.

So every time I dont praise the Vols during game week and actually point out it wont be easy Im going to be labeled a fan of that team?

There is a reason we are known as the worst fan base around. The majority of us cant handle rational discussions and its all about ignoring facts, singing together, and praying we win.

Then when we don't its "Well gosh there is always next year!!!"

Or...

The fact that you join the site the week we are playing Mizzou and then post like a Mizzou fan. Could be that.

Our offense has been hot not our defense.

Our defense is also going to be missing 2 major pieces. Luckily one is only for a half.

And the Missouri defense is way better than the cocks limp defense.

You guys might as well start calling me a gator fan for next year. I wont be easy on OUR vols for that game as well because nobody associated with Tennessee deserves to have it easy when it comes to that game.

Super troll. I'm not pissed at his troll stroll though I am just pissed he got Astro.

Totally sensible opposing fan and it would still he true if he said he felt they might win by 7.

Missouri is an opportunistic team. If you spot them enough opportunities they have proven they will take advantage. The opposite of what we were doing before Dobbs this season. Where most of them are not intune is at just how much Dobbs adds as likely most of their fans last saw him losing to them last year. If that was your frame of reference of.course you'd pick Missouri to win.

Mizzou Fan here. 1st off, to the OPs picture...that is Tiger Board. That board is awful...and I mean awful. Powermizzou.com (through rivals) is the board that a lot of common sense Mizzou fans use. I have used it for years. I don't know what the free board looks like, but the subscription side is pretty neat.

I am really looking forward to the game this Saturday night. When we left the little 12 a few years ago, one of the main things that excited a lot of us fans were the new road games that Mizzou will go to. Trust me....Ames, Iowa...anywhere in kansas...Waco, texas...and etc were horrible and boring road games.
I have been lucky that every road game that I have gone to since Mizzou joining the conference (ole miss..south Carolina..Florida...Vandy...Georgia..texas A&M...and Kentucky) I had an absolute blast!! (plus Mizzou won all of them, which made it better)
I will be leaving Columbia, MO at about 5 am on Friday Morning and will be staying at the Holiday Inn off Henley St in Knoxville Friday & Saturday Night. Any suggestions (close by)for great food for Friday night, breakfast Saturday morning, and lunch Saturday would be great!!
Anything you guys recommend is a must do on Gamedays in Knoxville?
Looking forward to having my 1st SEC experience in Knoxville this Saturday Night.....I had to sit in rain the whole game last Saturday in College Station..so hoping for good weather!

Win or Lose...I know it is going to be a very good/physical game!....with that said, no matter what the results are I am soooo thankful that my Mizzou Tigers are in the SEC!!
Take note opposing team fans this is how you approach an opponents board for the first time....

Welcome to VolNation and Welcome to Neyland I'm sure you will get the answers you need shortly..

So I take it like another poster pointed out LSU isnt a real SEC team? They were shutout by a below average Arkansas team.

At best with their schedule we are 7-3 so Im not real sure why SOS matters. I think its funny you guys dont believe Missouri is the better team. They have better wins than us, more wins than us, and have beaten us 2 straight times now.

They also play damn good on the road. We cant beat a lame duck Florida team at home.

They have more experience and they have been playing together for a lot longer than our guys.

Maybe Im wrong and there is no conflict with the team and everyone will just forgot and go out there and play their best. Other than Dobbs there is no reason to even consider us winning. If Worley were still out there everyone would have us losing this game by 10-14 points. So we better hope the AstroDobbs plays like he did against the cocks.

Your postings would make more sense if when speaking of the Vols try using “you” rather than “us”.

You can take it that I am knocking your talent... which I am to a degree... or you can take it that I'm giving props to your coaching staff which I am to a much greater degree.

The caveat to all of this is that you happened to join the East when UT was at a historically low ebb. UF has been Muschamped for the last 3 years or so. USCe has been better than the norm... but you have not seen the SECE in its "normal" strength. That's changing. UT is now loading up with the kind of talent it takes to win big. Coaching competence isn't the issue it was with Dooley's last staff.

Just don't get used to things being as easy as it has been for you.

Mizzou fans have also gotten used to schedules that were unusually easy by SEC standards. Even this year you are playing a still weaker than normal East, probably the #6 and #7 teams from the West (UT probably played #1 and #2/3), and an embarrassingly lame OOC slate.

I think this Sat. will be a highly competitive game and if I had to bet my house I say tenn. by 7-10 points...but we could pull the upset.
Most wouldn't call it an upset but I'd agree with that assessment.

I'd also say Sasser could easily play WR for other Sec programs...he is not a superstar and he wasn't suppose to be ours either But with DGB&Copeland booted and DWhite gimpy for most of the season he has performed well.
That's pretty much what I said. He's MU's top WR. For most other SEC teams... he's somewhere between 5 and 9.

Again, give credit to your staff for making the best of what they have. The loss of DGB was HUGE. In our pre-season debates I was one of those who said so. However I did not expect MU to piece together the season they have so far.

Hansbrough would and could play for some Sec teams of course he wouldn't for some of the top teams but he isn't chopped liver.
He's just prototypical for what MU seems to look for at RB. They give up size and even top end speed for quickness. They tend to run with more power than their size... not elite power but more than you expect. You top 3 RB's are all under 200 lbs. That's not true of any other SEC team. Most have a top 3 that all weigh over 200 lbs.

Again, Pinkel has a specific idea about how to build a team. Zigging when everyone else zags enables him to pick off some games he shouldn't win based on pure athletic talent.

Friday Night.. if you can get in I would recommend Ruth's Chris Steakhouse

Ruth's Chris Steak House - The Best USDA Prime Steak Restaurant

you can make reservations online through website

Saturday Breakfast My favorite is Cosmo's Cafe in Gourmets Market

Cosmo's Caffè | Gourmet's Market Online

No reservations needed

And for lunch before the game it would have to be Calhouns on the river.. It is directly across the street from the stadium and you can get the full tailgating Volnavy experience. Best ribs in Knoxville.

Calhoun's

Hope you have a great time watching your team get defeated.. If nothing else you will have fun and eat great!

P.S. If it is needed due to reservations you can always trade calhoun's and ruth's chris around. and if you can't get into ruths chris at all.. I would say do Calhoun's for dinner on friday and go to Burgerfi on the strip for lunch. It is owned by a former volgreat and serves the best burgers in the country.. let alone the city

I personally enjoy Ye Olde Steakhouse.

I would recommend Sweet P's barbecue, but I've never been. I'm told it's almost impossible to get into the day of a game (both before and after kickoff).

Here's the thing you're missing that a lot of fans, even some Mizzou fans don't understand.

Pinkel totally ignores the Star System. There is a recruiting formula that he and his staff uses that he got when he was OC for Don James when they were winning NCs at UDub.

It's kind of a trade secret, but believed to be positional based on certain stats, such as vertical leap, speed, times in certain drills, and more.

It works both ways. We've seen HGP offer 2stars and also pass on 4stars that has driven Mizzou fans crazy. But 3-4yrs later, he was proven right on the socalled 4star being a dud.

Last year's All-SEC LT Justin Britt was a 2star from near the Oklahoma border. OU and Okie Lite never offered, neither did Arky. After being a 2nd round choice of the Seahawks, he's now their starting LT.

So if you knock our talent, than Pinkel and Staff are absolute supermen in developing the low grade talent.

Keep in mind, from last years team, we replaced 2 DEs, 2 of 3 LBs, both CBs and a Safety, yet have one of the best Defenses in this Reload year.

IMO, I think they evaluate talent better than the so-called experts and they do a great job at developing the talent.

The real knock is too many misses on guys we're interested in. We really wanted both Barrett and Hendrix. But it's getting better, with the SEC move and now being known as a team that wins.

I may be wrong, but those messages appear to be from tiger board. Those are generally the most hardcore and gung-ho MU homers. They are often on there trashing Gary Pinkel. Coach Pinkel only has the best record in the history of Missouri football. Those of us whom have followed the program for over four decades understand the advantages and disadvantages of the program. This years football team has been playing very erratic, but seems to perform better on the road. If MU brings their best game to Knoxville, they can defeat Tennessee. On the other hand, if Bad Missouri shows up, it will be ugly.

Yes, he's very respectable.

I understand it just fine. He recruits to a "system". That doesn't make the players suddenly elite athletes. He gets some of those too... but mostly it is how he tailors the players he recruits to the systems that he runs. I wouldn't give James too much of the credit though. Pinkel didn't make real noise at MU until his 7th year. There was quite a bit of trial and error in there.

It's kind of a trade secret, but believed to be positional based on certain stats, such as vertical leap, speed, times in certain drills, and more.
It isn't that big of a secret. He finds guys who for various reasons are underrecruited. Jones has done the same over his career and even since arriving at UT. Cam Sutton was a 3* player as was Dobbs on Rivals. Jones' OL recruiting is similar to Pinkel's.

Where Pinkel excels is finding players who fit his unique system. He also takes a shot on kids from small or obscure HS's. IIRC, Sam played at a really small school that didn't have much football success. A lot of talent gets missed at lower level HS programs. Many of those players need a RS and a year or two to catch up but if it is what you can get... you can make a living with it.

It works both ways. We've seen HGP offer 2stars and also pass on 4stars that has driven Mizzou fans crazy. But 3-4yrs later, he was proven right on the socalled 4star being a dud.
Not sure if you are aware of this or not but the public recruiting sites are not the ones coaches use. Every major program uses private recruiting svcs to help them find and evaluate talent. They are FAR more accurate than the public, consumer oriented recruiting svcs.

Last year's All-SEC LT Justin Britt was a 2star from near the Oklahoma border. OU and Okie Lite never offered, neither did Arky. After being a 2nd round choice of the Seahawks, he's now their starting LT.
Yeah. I believe one of your other starters was a walk-on from Montana or Wyoming.

So if you knock our talent, than Pinkel and Staff are absolute supermen in developing the low grade talent.
No. You still have to factor in the unusually easy road Mizzou has had last year and this year. Between catching teams at the right time and playing a lighter schedule... it just hasn't been "typical" SEC competition. That won't last.

That said, Pinkel and staff DO a very good job of developing low grade or underdeveloped athletes. That's pretty much my point.

OTOH... the safe bet is still those 4/5* players.

Keep in mind, from last years team, we replaced 2 DEs, 2 of 3 LBs, both CBs and a Safety, yet have one of the best Defenses in this Reload year.

You are currently 6th in the SEC in total D.... against a light schedule. The most impressive showing MU has had on D was USCe. UGA rolled you... and they're the only ranked team you've played.

You have a good and perhaps very good D... made to look better by the competition you've faced.

The real knock is too many misses on guys we're interested in. We really wanted both Barrett and Hendrix. But it's getting better, with the SEC move and now being known as a team that wins.

Everyone misses on players they want. Its just a reality when you compete for recruits on that level.

I know you all are convinced that this run can continue just on the type of talent Pinkel has been able to get and develop historically. But it can't. UT is coming out of the worst low ebb in over 100 years of football. You can count on UF to hire a good coach and start loading up again.

Your West rival is pretty lame- Arkansas... and your fortune in draws continues next fall as well. You get MSU that will lose a boat load of Srs from this year's team. Mizzou continues its ridiculous habit of not scheduling quality OOC opponents as well in 2015 with your "tough" game being BYU.

I'm not really sure if the SEC will ever pressure MU on their OOC scheduling... but they really should. I believe most of the others schedule at least one power 5 OOC opponent.

BUT... the East teams you face at the top tier are about to get much tougher. The historic big 3 are about to reassert themselves.

Tigerboard is basically horrific to attempt to follow. I have been on there almost 10 years and have the hang of it. It is like having an ******* for a friend, he might be a horrible person but he is our *******.

Also most Mizzou people feel a sense of confidence based on our last two matchups together. I wouldn't say it is over the top. I think a large part of the Mizzou fanbase thinks this is about a 50/50 matchup.

Side note: 1. I am looking for a couple of good hangouts Friday night. And 2. a good recommendation on where to park Saturday. We went 2 years ago but had a cab. We went to the Tin Roof and some place down by the river that was okay. Any other spots you think we should hit up? I plan on taking the woman to Ye Olde Steakhouse on Friday night because I have heard some good things.

If you are staying close to downtown, go to market square/old city area. There are lots of bars and a couple breweries. If you are staying north(merchants rd area, not much up there but restaurants. If you are staying west there are bars down Kingston pk and further west is turkey creek entertainment and shopping complex. If you are staying east I don't know what to tell you, good luck out there.
