What Other Message Boards Are Saying: Battle of Bristol (Virginia Tech) Edition

A rough first week is behind us. After a poor performance by both team and coaching staff, we got one last jabbing today by the AP poll dropping us 8 spots. We desperately need to look ahead. It's Bristol time.

We've all been waiting for this game for a few years now and it's finally here. The Virginia Tech message boards look very similar to ours right now. They are unsatisfied with their Week 1 performance, and they are ready to get on the field during a real game and see what their team is made of. They are amped about being part of history, and they, like us, are focused more on what the end result will be than the actual experience itself.

Without further ado, here's what the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University faithful are saying about Saturday's historic matchup at Bristol Motor Speedway:

_____________________________________________

-I would say there is a cautious optimism about Fuente right now. No one is extremely excited about him yet, usually discussion of him ends in debates.

-If we run our offense this week, go ahead and write our names on the Bristol Trophy, this one's over:

-Does anyone else find it odd for a VA Tech fan to say this? Granted, they're not currently a great team, but historically as a program they aren't exactly Central Florida....

-On Dobbs (with a slight dig at UT):

-They really, really like Bud Foster. It's not that it isn't understandable, but when discussing the potential success of UT's offense, I'm seeing a TON of "You do know we have Bud Foster, right?" And "Does the name 'Bud Foster' ring a bell?" etc etc.

-Summary of their 2016 squad:

-I would say about 80% of posters thought they would lose before the Appy State game. They seemed to feel a narrow loss is somewhat of a victory. Post-Appy State, I would say about 70% think they will win.

-They ranked 44th in Total Defense last year. According to them, the low ranking is because they "tried a new defensive strategy last year where they blitzed a lot," but not to worry...... apparently this year they're going back to their "real" defense...... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

-General score predictions are a bit all over the place. Most of them are predicting a VA Tech victory by anywhere from 3-10 points. Occasionally one will drop in with a UT victory by 14 or so.

-Sounds like we'll have the edge here:

-As concerned as we are about our O-line play against App State, the are equally as concerned about their O-line play against Liberty (similar to us, returning starters underperformed in week 1).

-Dobbs injury rumor was brought up, which turned into a pretty big Dobbs debate:

-Their "5 players to watch out for" were Barnett, Sutton, Malone, Hurd, Dobbs.

These were some replies to the list:

-It seems they are working on gamespeed and taking more snaps this season. They are referring to their "New hurry up offense" a good bit:

-General attendance predictions have the 150K Bristol allotment as UT 90-100k, Tech 50-60K.

-They are trashing the SEC after opening weekend. For those of you that don't have conference pride, just know that "Tennessee plays in the 'mighty SEC' which is a joke of a conference," and "The SUC, I mean the $EC" are phrases being tossed around frequently.

-Week 1 discussion of both teams from what seams to be a reasonable fan:

An absolute slaughtering at Bristol is exactly what we need right now. I will be in the stands, and I know several posters here will as well. We need to get loud. Let's light that place on fire and move to 2-0.

GBO. No matter what.

Damn, chatt. One of the best posts I've ever read. Thanks, man.... and I could not agree more with your last paragraph. Go Vols!!!!

Can't really disagree with the post on Dobbs. But Dobbs will be more effective if/when blocking improves as well as scheme.

I wonder how much crowd noise will be a factor in the game, like to see the decibel ratings on the field once the game is up and going, could be interesting

I think the distance of the stands from the field combined with the design being very open (not steep) will negate the extra number of people.

That was my initial thought as well, could actually be a neutral field simply because of distance from stands.

Great work. Hoping we see a massacre on Saturday. I am kinda surprised by how tame some of their posters were.

I also really enjoy these threads each week. Great job.

But, I've always thought it would be cool if you revisited some of these sites a couple of days after the game to give us an idea of what they are thinking "after the fact". I don't know you from Adam, but I'm sure you have plenty of time for that kind of stuff, right?

Yosef's Cabin (App State) quotes

VT Trash talking

This morning in a meeting two VT fans started their banter about we will do what you all could not. I say that Tennessee runs over them like an elephant running to steal a peanut from a mouse.

I just found it ironic that they took the time to give App State some credit.

They couldn't cover the Spread against FCS Liberty. I wouldn't be talking any trash if I was a VT fan.

I watched the game between VT and Liberty and was NOT impressed with the Hokies. I think Tennessee handles them this weekend and doubter will start to realize that App is for real. They certainly won't all come around at once, but it will be a start

Ah yes...The typical VT fan. Think they're the best, although have not done anything significant since the days of Vick. I hate with a passion VT fans, and see and hear a good amount of them where I live. They will be lucky to finish 7-5 this year.

I think Tennessee handles them fairly convincingly.

n my 17 years living in the Commonwealth of Virginia, I have found two truths: 1. There is only a small sliver of Northwestern North Carolina I'd rather live, and 2. You can't tell Tech fans anything. They're almost as hard-headed as CHeat fans. Almost.

Go Vols.

According to Tennessee fans, they kept their game plan vanilla as possible and prevented Dobbs from running as they were afraid he might get hurt. Looks to me like he took a pretty good beating anyway, especially on the overtime fumble play. That said I hope the Vols curb stomp VaTech......and we curb stomp ODU.....just like UVA got curb stomped by the Spiders last week.....just let the entire state's FBS get curb stomped!

Up and down I-81 from Washington to Frederick Counties...FULL of arrogant Hokies.

Growing up on the border of WV and VA (near where WVAppsfan grew up) my 2 favorite teams were WVU and VPI - we had 2 hometown radio stations - one carried WVU and the other VT --- these days WV and VT are still 2 of my favorite teams but well behind APP - that being said, I gotta pull for the Vols - VT isn't going anywhere this year and every Vol win should help us as long we keep winning !!!

If we play like we should, like we did last year, we should win this one easily. If we really have regressed, and last week's team rears its ugly head, VT may very well win.

However, I'd rather say that we were locked in a nail biter with an FBS team that went 11-2 last year than locked in a game at halftime still with an FCS team that went 6-5 last year.

I guess, that being said, I don't blame them for not fearing us. I'm just holding on to hope that last week was an anomaly and not the normal.

Does Ohio not have message boards Chatt? You're slacking :)

We have to wrap up their running back, he is a lot like Jamal Lewis, but not as fast. We need to press the receiver and get some QB pressure. On offense we will need to throw some deep balls to free up the running game, we can expect to see 8 in the box. If they look at the Kanas game they will see our WR core as no threat, but they will be sadly mistaken. :eek:lol:Tim Albin and Burrow will need to earn their money this week, if we expect to win.

Not really, we can play with them. We do not have to be flawless or lucky :eek:lol::eek:lol::eek:lol:

Finally, a less delusional fan: I still feel as if we are completely overmatched. I say we cash the check and not suffer any more injuries. This is not our most important game.

More craziness: Tennessee can surely beat us with their skill players but I don't see them just rolling us in the trenches. Stuff the run, take a few chances and don't turn the ball over. stay in the game and see what happens. it would be the ultimate irony if we pull this one off after losing to TX ST at home, but right now it doesn't seem all that far-fetched.

These guys are hilarious.

We had a horrible week granted, but our defense was the best in the nation last week during the first half. If you guys cannot throw, you will lose, you are not running over anybody, believe that. Texas State got us through the air, we will have to see how good your aerial attack is.

Trying to insult us...and misspelling Peyton's name : lived in TN during the Payton years. Vols fans are a lot like Buckeye fans, just less teeth.

Lol. They have one, and it's terrible.

Very little source material. Wasn't enough to do a thread on this week.

If we lose tomorrow..... It's 100% my fault

I got the stuff above from their message board. The thread was only like 4 pages long. But some of their smack talk was just over the top delusional!

I can't decide on whether the fact that Ohio fans think they can play with us is an indictment of how the nation now views our program, or a testament to the quality of weed they have in Ohio.

Has to be some pretty high grade stuff if they're thinking they can hang with us.
