What on Earth Do You All Want??????

What do they want? Fulmer has 36 years as experience as a coach. His record as head coach is 152-52, pretty impressive. What these guys want is acknowledgment that they are somehow more qualified than Fulmer to make that decision. You know, most have been loyal fans since they were 12, so they each have 5 years experience watching football. Add in the X-BOX experience and Fulmer hasn’t a chance.

What they want is for UT to be in the national championship hunt every year year after year and it's not gonna happen. UT since 1952 (the year Gen. Neyland retired) has always been a middle of the road football program nationally except under Coach Fulmer. Thats why I feel very comfortable with whom ever he hires. I have always been a UT fan in all sports win or lose. Now I hope whom ever is hired puts us back on the map. The one thing that does give me a little hope is the fact that our in state high school talent is much better than 20 or 30 years ago. It's hard to reload year after year like Alabama when your local high schools do not produce D-1 level prospects.

What do I want?

At this point, I'd be quite happy with organizational competence. Successful results only follow a successful process. Saban is trying to teach everyone that lesson by owning the SEC every freaking year, but some folks just want to believe that all you have to do is hire a reality TV star or someone with mad Twitter game and everything is solved.

Only if you hire the wrong one.

Maybe we can get Mike Riley, Bret Bielema, Gary Andersen, Jim, McElwain, Butch Jones, Jim Mora, or Todd Graham?

All of these guys are available. All of these guys were successful enough head coaches at one stop to be hired away by historically good to great programs. How did that work out?

It doesn't matter who you hire if you hire the right guy. He will be successful. If you hire the wrong guy, he won't be.

Gene Stallings was fired from every head coaching job he ever had until Alabama hired him. He averaged 10 wins per season and won a NC.

So was it Gene Stallings or was it Alabama or was it that the right fit and set of circumstances came together? All the coaches you named, whether folks agree or not, are good coaches. Sometimes the fit is not right.

I am convinced that there is no coach out there that is a good fit for Tennessee.

Our stadium, facilities, tradition and HISTORY say otherwise. Plus the money the football program generates on a yearly basis. Plus Knoxville being a Top 5 viewer in sports in the country. We can WANT and EXPECT as a fan base, greatness. Do NOT let these 10 years tell you, me or anyone else that we are a middle of the pack SEC program. Have we lately? YES! But i'll be darn to accept middle of the pack! Always strive for greatness!

Your preaching to the choir here, but, why is it with all the tradition and all the money and facilities we just stared down the barrel of the worst season ever.....

I have to let the last 10 years speak for exactly what they are and how they are viewed in W-L category.

We have "lately" because of the admin and the persistence to not aim for greatness, they are happy reaping the money.

I'll give you the perfect example of UT and how it relates to the Bengals.

Mike Brown made no qualms about making money, this is a business. He didn't care about what people thought, he was in it to make money and was honest. Guess what, the stands still were full, merchandise still sold, and he made money.

When his 2 kids became older and got involved you saw a push to become better, and they got a little better in the new millennia. But, guess what, it's still the same product and we see the same results right now.

Until people start holding the "brains" behind the curtain responsible with their wallets, people will continue on with their own happy life and spend their money on their team, and this is where we are.

It's simple, really. I want decades of sustained excellence - ~0.800 WP, half or more of the CCs, in the NC mix almost every season, playing for the NC ~1/5 of the time (winning it 1 or more out of every 5 times) while leading the conference in fewest penalty yards assessed, special teams play, academic achievement, graduation rate, post-graduation placements/jobs (pro football or otherwise), and no NCAA penalties. I want kickers who set records for field goal accuracy & distance with 4.0 GPAs and published papers during their undergraduate studies. I want OLs who thwart even the meanest pass rushers, open holes for RBs that an SUV could drive through, and file for patents as a group. I want QB/WR combos who set NCAA records while creating innovations that revolutionize industries and services world wide. I want a football program which is the standard bearer for an athletics department which is the envy of the free world. I want a scholarship offer from Tennessee to be winning the lottery.

That's what I want.

Well thanks for asking. I will take a burrito supreme, two soft tacos and some of those cinnamon twists. And a mountain dew to wash it down with.

Appreciate it.

I want everyone from the admin to the Athletic department to all the fans to accept we are: an average, middle of the road SEC football team. We will be lucky to win an East title once every ten years, and we are an average 8-9 win team. Why, because this is reality, because history supports it, and because facts support it.

Wish it were not so, we are the best and most insane fanbase in the country, but, we are exactly what is posted above.

Change it to 25 years and you hit the nail on the head.

An experienced coach that can win now - not one that needs to spend the next 3 to 5 years of on the job training to win. If we get an OJT HC - we are at this same point again in 3 to 4 years - maybe sooner.

Let's be real. If the during the next 4 seasons someone calls for another head coach (except in case of proven ethical infractions) then those people deserve whatever coach has to accept the expectations of turning a, self described, dumpster fire into SEC east champs in 2'years or less. Some people are stupid. Nothing can fix that.

Every coach is learning on the job. If they're not, they will soon be learning while looking for a job.

I am glad you read the lead post to this thread! Facts appear to confuse you.....

As far as coaches turning us down, Doug Matthews said that coaches called Bill Synder to ask about Currie,so maybe thats the reason we have been turned down. I hope we get Pruitt but I will be a vol fan no matter.

I think it's reasonable to assert that people have to lower their expectations because of some temporary situation, but I also think that if a coach came in and won a national title he would still be fired.

I do not think the game of football can be played sustainably at the UT fan expectation level.

I want our staff to be the highest paid coaching staff in America. You get what you pay for. if we can’t get the guy we want we should be thinking of going the route of hiring a bunch of guys who would make an all star cast of coaches. It would not be dumb to spend 20 million a year on a staff. Bring in a great defensive coordinator pay him 3mil bring in a great OC pay him 3 mil bring in an established head coach pay him 5 mil. But I think we will go the cheap route as bad as I don’t want to say it... I think our future will be similar to that of Vanderbilt and South Carolina during the 90s. I hope I’m wrong.

I want a head coach who can assemble a quality, competent staff. I want a staff that can coach his position with knowledge and expertise. I want a head coach and staff that can consistently recruit top 10 [preferably top 5] classes each year. I want a head coach and staff the can develop recruits mental and physical abilities so that said recruit performs at his absolute highest ability. I want a head coach and staff that respect and acknowledge follow coaches, players, and fans as well as being respected by follow coaches, players, and fan. I want a head coach and staff that can develop a strategic game plan but be able to change said game plan anytime as the game unfolds. I want a head coach and staff that can immediately identify the opposing team’s weakness then quickly attack said weakness. I want a head and staff that clearly and decisively understand both game and time management. I want a head coach and staff that demonstrates and projects his passion and love for the game, the players, and the fans on a daily basis.

Most importantly, I do not give a damn if this head coach is a “Tennessee Guy” or had previous head coaching experience as long as he can manage and control his staff to accomplish the above tasks.

I want an athletic department thats not controlled by an egotistical, maniacal, power hungry, mosquito d***ed man child that has the IQ Of a mentally challenged garden slug. I want an AD that values winnng over some mythical high moral standard.

Fulmer should have been eased into the AD job, and the ten year debacle wouldn't have happened. Of course, Hamilton had his tentacles on the job, so ...

Those underachieving loyal fans like the X-Box excitement; that's why they want an offensive "genius" to light up the scoreboard even if it means games lost. The defensive guys just go out and win games and championships - boring stuff to overage adolescents afflicted with ADD.
