What must Heupel do going forward this season?

I’m with you for the most part. But to call Aguilar a journeyman almost implies he isn’t 100% better than who we had last year. I’ll play devils advocate here. This is the 2nd time we’ve had a qb placed in our lap who is better than the guys we’ve recruited and developed.
Bingo, Aguilar being here should not be looked at as something we had to overcome but rather a significant upgrade we lucked into. Kudos to JH getting him ready and comfortable with the offense this quickly, but he's a drastic upgrade to what we had.

I say win 2 of 3 against flordia, bama and Oklahoma. Otherwise he's showing regression. Tim Banks needs to be on the hot seat.
Defense is the biggest deficiency right now. We need to focus on tackling and fundamentals AND get healthy on that side of the ball. They need to look at who deserves the most reps at the safety spot. We absolutely cannot have an off day against Mississippi state on offense or we're gonna lost that game.

I remember all those games. As for the QB draw, our MLB wasn't up to the task. We were in position to make plays, our players simply couldn't execute. Our CBs had a tough time this past Saturday. Nothing Banks could do about it. Losing Pili last year killed us yet we still played good enough defense to make the playoffs

Didn’t do anything to help the MLB out in the Mustard game. Just a simple QB draw or read with the center as lead blocker. I kept waiting for the NT to slide down and force the center to help block to free up the MLB and the adjustment was never made.

If I recall correctly this is the game that Byron Young ( or at least I recall it was Young ) had the strip score on the first play of the game that was called back because the officials ruled the play was dead.

I don't think it was the first play, but it happened

I hate the label "journeyman" too, but damned if he literally isn't one. The guy has been around

a journeyman simply because he has journeyed to several places in his college career.
AFAIK, cjh has only recruited 3 (jmerk, gmac, and fbrandon). I guess it is fair to say he recruited JMilt as well.

I thought we were "lucky". I now think CJH has the ability to get the most out of anybody at QB. As long as he is here, I am not worried about QB.

I think we can do that! We almost beat Georgia.

Even with our struggles in Gainesville I think we beat them this time. Napier’s team is always good for game management blunders and crucial turnovers, penalties.

I trust our QB now than the last two… Think with McCoy back we could split between OU and the Gumps. Bama is inconsistent and OU has to come to Knoxville. Could be wrong, but that’s what I am thinking.

Give Will Muschamp 3.5M. What good is prostituting the program out to the highest bidder if we’re not going to try to actively upgrade every aspect of our program?

He’s not even the DC. He’s an analyst on a D that just gave up 41 points to a first year QB despite having 4-5 stars at nearly every position.

I doubt Napier will be coaching and half the players will be interested in going into the transfer portal by then. The Swamp will also be half drained. I think we will win easily.

Tuscaloosa will be a challenge. I think we can matchup well on the line of scrimmage and can run the ball on Alabama which gives us hope but the fact that it is on the road makes me concerned about Tennessee's ability to win there.

Then again, Tennessee played Alabama well there in 2023 and almost pulled out the W. For some reason, we tend to play better against Alabama on the road.

Just win. Doesn't matter if it's by 1 or 100...past that, everything else is side notes and commentary.

Tim Banks does not need to be on the hot seat. That's crazy. We lost a game we should have won. If there's one main take-away- we still need to be more physical. GA was able to impose their will when they absolutely needed to.

Excellent post. Georgia OL moved our DL pretty much at will. Need to get more compute front on D…and pass defense needs to improve, too.

Getting some players back from injury could go a long way towards improving both things.

For sure, I think Billy is cooked. He took a little heat off after they played better the second half of last season then set his seat on fire with their last two games.

Their schedule is brutal and Napier just doesn’t seem to have what it takes. Road games against decent teams definitely concern me, but Alabama obviously isn’t what they were under Nick Saban. I believe two out of three is definitely doable.

This Saturday may end Napier if they get blown out by Miami.

Our defense was exposed to the rest of the SEC. If Heupel can fix that, the season might be saved. As it stands now, Vandy even thinks they have a chance.
