And I am not talking about talent, or coaching or rivalries necessarily, although feel free to bring those out too. I was at work with a former Air Force quarterback, and we were comparing notes. He made some interesting comments about the SEC and how it compares to other conferences. I was wondering what some of you think about it. For Example:

Tailgating. They don't do much of that in the Pac-10 because the schools are so far apart. I can't imagine taking the grill on the road from Oregon down to Arizona for a weekend game...

Stadiums: Obvious

Fan base: Loyal to the schools beyond a fault. If it is a good powder day, Utah fans would probably rather head for the mountains. I'd sit in freezing rain :)

What do ya'll think?

i think the talent, coaches, and great rivalries over the years is why there are so many loyal fans and that imo is what makes the SEC great. fans are what make sports great imo

To me its the type of football that is played.

My Take

Big 10-good teams, no one great. Teams good at all aspects of the game but not great at anything.

Big 12- all offense, No DEFENSE

ACC- The definition of overrated teams.

PAC 10- Fast, tons of talent. Couldn't hit thier way out of a paper bag. Those teams couldn't handle playing SEC defenses week in and week out.

Big East- conference on the rise but not enough talent top to bottom

SEC- the mecca of college football. Best recruits, Best coaches, thanks to our New TV contract Most Money. And we have an Identity. OLD school football, Great running game, big, fast, dominating Defenses. Don't get me wrong we have some QB's than can sling it but we play physical football. If we could only do something about slive, that would fix our officiating issues.

But the best thing about SEC football.

SEC football is greater than the sanctity of weddings which are planned around bye weeks. It is the brotherhood of all of us in outlying states who will be hospitable to all of our rivals except on game day whereby we spew our angry venom at one another. It is the emptiness of the cold eight-month long void we know as the "off-season" until fall camp arrives. It is the communal glue which binds thousands of individuals into one collective voice. In short...SEC football is a religion practiced by no other school's or conference's fans in the country.

Amen, I am inspired. I'm ready to hit somebody.

It's simple: In the bible belt, the only religion that everyone can agree on is football.

This article is a couple years old, but it really put into words the way I feel about football. It's written by an Ole Miss fan, so obviously there's some bias, but I think he really captured the essence of SEC football. Also it's pretty long, so I'm prepared to take the heat from that...
