What makes a good coach? Fire Fulmer, Chavis, Cutcliffe..why?

more thoughts on what makes a great coach....sometimes it's the intangibles...the personality, the way of connecting to players and getting them intrinsically motivated to the point where they will outperform themselves because they don't know they can't...This type of coach can't be ultraconservative--it just shows fear and distrust in the team. My gut feeling is that Fulmer has become disconnected from the players and can't get to them like he could when he was a fresh new coach; but that's not to say it's an age issue, more of just a personality issue.

Cutcliffe needs to be named head coach. Do think they had the same talent on D at Ole Miss as Tenn. Well you never saw his teams miss tackles. He would bring more discipline to the team. His offense is proof, first game on the road new offense, how many false starts did they have? 1

We were 10th in the SEC in offense last year. Cut is not the answer.

to me, the more important question is who would replace him?

i mean it seems to me you cannot just want to fire someone without having a likely replacement. and then, that is when we are in a position to judget he merits of the replacement.

that is why i started the thread about a likely replacement.

I'm not worried about finding a replacement. Just bring in somebody that doesn't punt and fold up the tents in the closing minutes of the 4th quarter...

What makes Spurrier a great coach or is that folklore?

Spurrier is 1) audacious, 2) smart, and 3) unpredictable. I haven't seen any signs that our coaches aren't smart, but he's beaten them for years with the other 2. He'd fake a punt on 4th & 30 just to let you know you'd better be ready for a fake on 4th & 8. The other side doesn't know if you're bluffing or not, unless you never bluff.

If I were a coach, I'd ask myself, "What would Spurrier do?" a few times a game. I'd get my butt handed to me occasionally, but I'd keep defenses honest. We could have done with some of that tonight.

I could see Fulmer on the sideline wearing a WWSD bracelet. :birgits_giggle:

Spurrier and Meyers are both offensive coaches. Spurrier hasn't had a glowing record at Gamecock land (does that invoke the elusive equal talent clause?). Meyers is coming off of a national title year but is now moving into his true spread option era and lost a bunch of offensive and defensive talent from last year so we'll see if that works. If your defense allows tailbacks and receivers to run wild and can't tackle anything moving then you will have trouble winning any game.

7-5 is pretty good at USC... plus he beat us and Florida in 2005. He should have beaten Florida last season.

Yes, but we were 4th in scoring. That is coaching, finding ways to score when you have to use smoke and mirrors. We will run the ball better this year. We couldn't run at all last year.:good!:

I just don't see anybody better. Somebody has to bridge the gap between Fulmer and Peyton Manning:)

Spurrier's from Tennessee---if UT offered enough money, he'd leave that mediocre program at USC and head to Knoxville baby!!! Steve, come on home!
One thing to remember, Hootie Johnson is a Gamecock. :eek:hmy:

But I think he's either left Augusta or is in the process of leaving Augusta.

Wait a minute!!!! Let's talk about Spuriers greatness as a coach at the end of this season. Now that he is getting some of his players where is the SC program going. Spurier is not the second coming. He did very well in Florida because that state is loaded with most of the Football talent in this part of the country. Sure his offensive scheme was innovative then but where are the going now. Let's evaluate "the old ball coach" in December.

Go Vols, Pound the Rock and Run to Victory

You got an explanation for him winning the ACC at Duke? :ermm:

After what you saw Saturday on offense, you still want Cutcliffe?

I say we scrap the entire squad (except Troop) and start over fresh and brand new.

I don't remember any smoke and mirrors plays other than the Florida game with Coker.

There was no creativity or "smoke and mirrors" I can remember besides that.

You can't tell me that you were not impressed just a little with the O. If they use Coker and Foster I think it will be good. That was the first game, and they ran it pretty good. Our WR's are young, they will get better. At least we see something different. How many times have people said our O needs to be changed. We'll see how it goes.

I have confidence in Trooper Taylor to coach up the receivers, the o-line showed some improvement although is Cal's D-line any good?, our running game should be good, but once again, when the game was on the line, our game plan went fetal and we choked.
But, the offense wasn't the problem Sat.
That said, I admire Cutcliffe but do not want him as our next head coach...not the radical change needed.

We scored a lot on a PAC-10 defense. I'm not impressed just yet.

Of course here we go with the typical "fire the coach" threads so I began thinking of what really makes a good coach.

It'd be nice to have intelligent banter on the matter.

My thoughts are that Fulmer puts the fear into nobody that plays him. He gives the impression that he's always hoping to win instead of expecting to win and typically I would say that he's won as much as he has mainly on talent alone.

What made Bear Bryant such a great coach or is that folklore? What makes Spurrier a great coach or is that folklore?

Thoughts?

clean house bring in new blood and start all over. we are bad.:banghead2:

I wanted to say that my wife and I were at the game and literally sat right by the team entrance. I would hate to say anything to hurt a man's ability to feed his family but all of those coaches should be ashamed. The players looked so unmotivated when they came up the stairs before the game. They had the attitude of " lets just win and get out of here". At the half they were beat. In all my years of watching college football and playing it, I have never seen a Tennessee team look that unemotional. The players were not getting each other "up" during series or timeouts. This is poor coaching. This goes beyond x's and o's. Sure Coach Fulmer, Cutcliff, Chavis and all of those guys are great coaches but without the ability to motivate and create excitement the best plays don't usually work on the college level. If anyone saw the UCLA-USC game last year, they were having team huddles jumping up and down in the 4th quarter. That is how you motivate. Hopefully they will find it when they go to Florida. I know they had a tough time off the field in Berkeley, but the better team did not win. Just the most inspired. This is the worst Tennessee game I've seen because the effort was so inconsistant and the attitude was so poor. I hope they change it. Thanks for letting me vent.

jackson44 since you played college ball let me ask you a question ...

i was talking about the motivational aspect with a friend of mine who played division IA (he wanted to wear the orange but was too slow in the 40), and he said that the coaches actually play a very small role in motivation. he said it comes from the upperclassmen, and especially the team captains and seniors.

i found that hard to believe but he has been there and i have not.

what was your experience/opinion?
