What it will take to keep Pearl...

If you look at this from a business standpoint it is wise to pay to keep CBP. Why did CPF get the boot? Empty seats right? How many seats will be empty next year with a Pearlless team? so you pay the 1 mil more to make what 5-10 mil. It's a smart thing to do. As long as UT basketball is making money then CBP is worth WHATEVER we have to pay him to stay.

False, you're assuming CBP is the only coach that can have success at UT. That's way off base.

No surprise you had to mention Fulmer and his SEC East "title" in your article. You failed to mention the things that got Fulmer fired.

Your argument that Pearl deserves more money because he has to compete against Donovan and Cal is ludicrous. Donovan has two NCAA titles and Calipari has taken his team to the finals.

I hope Pearl sticks around, but your points are terrible.

Pearl is worth $2.5 mil. But I would tell him if he wants more than that then needs to concentrate on his performance in the tournaments. He has not been very impressive as a tournament coach over the last 4 years. But if Memphis is willing to pay him $3 mil for winning 20 games a year, so be it. That he can easily accomplish.

If we don't give him a raise, he leaves. It's really quite simple. How bad do we want him?

Exactly. If a team, Memphis or anyone else, is willing to pay him 2.5-3 mil, then he is worth it on the open market. I think that he will definitely be worth that money to someone, but MH just has to decide if he's worth it to us.

UT has never place great value on basketball or its coaches until BP arrived and now it appears it doesn't have enough resolve to keep him from The Real Univeristy of Tennesee for baketball - Memphis.

"It wouldn't seem unreasonable to pay the guy UT expects to beat those coaches $2 to $2.2 million next season."

This raises the question who else could we attract for $2.2 million?

Sean Miller. Maybe Mark Few.

Since Tim Floyd decided not to go to Arizona, would Memphis rather have him than Pearl? There were reports he was originally Memphis' #1 choice before it looked like he was going to Arizona.

Well if he holds UT to that type of extortion I don't want him here, he does not deserve a raise last year was mediocre at best if giving him a raise just because someone else wants him; I say don't let the door hit you in the azz on the way out (And IMO I don't think that's gonna happen)

Just curious....how you knew what Pearl wants? Articles say he wants more pay for assistants & better facilities (which is a BS imo)....so no....it's not quite that simple.

I guess we'll find out soon enough "what it took to keep" Pearl in Knoxville.

he's worth it now....I don't see someone coming to Tennessee and do much better than Pearl. I just don't see the 'big name' coaches wanting to come here.

We can talk about money all day long, but do we want to shell out more money just to have a coach that might take us past the sweet 16. The salaries are getting ridiculous and most of our money needs to be put into more important programs than a bunch of athletes that most likely won't graduate.

So what will it take next year when he 'turns down' all the major vacancies and an offer to replace David Letterman?

I'd say Pearl will stay the No. 3 paid coach in the SEC as long as he's the No. 1 winningest coach during his tenure and qualifies for the NCAA Tournament.

That's what Hamilton means when he says "market value.''
