no Doug Atkins?

No Majors? Second in the heisman...

No Spiva? Hacksaw? Kiner? Walker??

Way too many great players in Tennessee history to name a top 2 at each position. Would be very difficult.

I would have ignored responding had you not included Suffridge. Once you did that, you opened it up for all time and there are several should be included over later players. Even though their stats might not equate what they brought to their teams and the results plays into it.

Chuck Webb best RB to every set foot on campus... had he not gotten hurt in 1990, IMO, would have captured the Heisman...

Just my thoughts Bud.. not knocking what you posted. All opinions anyway...

WR Anthony Miller. He doesn’t have the stats being a JUCO that was injured most of his senior season, but IMO the best combination of speed, hands, and bad ass-ness to ever wear the orange.

See my post above. Should have 2 lists, those before 64 when unlimited substitution was enacted and those after 64.

Thank you.

Maybe I meant Evan. I thought I remembered Eric returning as a freshman and even if he didn’t, his pick returns were electric.
Yes Eric did return as a freshman but Evan has the SEC record for kick return average. He is also tied for most KR TD's in SEC history

Always a tough list to make
Because what style of offense. Defense?
So many great Vols. And I'm not going 2-Deep because then you really want to add more. So it needs to be a starting lineup imo.

Offense: (Pro- Style)
QB Peyton Manning
RB Chuck Webb
TE Jason Witten
WR Carl Pickens
WR Jauan Jennings
WR Peerless Price
OT Chad Clifton
LG Trey Smith
C Scott Wells
RG Fred Weary
OT Juwan James

Plan- Spread the field but also motion the TE. Be able to run the ball to strong or weak side. Peyton was the best distributor QB ever at UT. At WR you have deep speed (Pickens). RAC speed (Price), and CLUTCH ability (Jennings). Webb was as good as Barry Sanders but most fans outside of Tennessee don't know that.

Defense: (4-2-5)

SDE Derek Barnett
DT Reggie White *
DT John Henderson
LEO Leonard Little
ILB Al Wilson
WLB Jerrod Mayo
STAR Eric Berry
CB Cameron Sutton
CB Jermon McCoy
FS Deon Grant
SS Dale Carter

Plan- Attack. Yes Reggie White at DT because he was the greatest defender EVER. The STAR position is one of the greatest positions in football and Eric Berry would have mastered it because he was tailor made for it. He could have blitzed still had all those INTs and would also be in there for run support. You couldn't or wouldn't be able to block him. Barnett over Atkins because I saw Barnett break the sack record in 3 years as as a true junior. Little over Pearce Jr wasn't easy. Pearce was very clutch in 2024. His stats were better in 2023, but he was amote rounded player in 2024. Sutton at CB over Terry Fair. McCoy at CB after only 1 year is crazy, but he is that good.
Al Wilson and Jerrod Mayo side by side with that D-Line in front of them would have wracked up 100 tackles and 5 sacks each. Dale Carter at safety isn't fair. Him and Berry with 3 average DB marks and elite secondary. Playing with Grant at deep safety with playmakers like Sutton and McCoy at CB is GODMODE defensively

Special Teams
P- Colquitt
K- Hall
PR- Patterson
KR- Evan Berry

Plan- Patterson over Dee Williams because Patterson was also a star on offense, and is the most explosive player in Tennessee Vol history.
Evan Berry was excellent at reading lanes and had the speed to attack them. Many good punters and kickers at UT. Those two had many great games

Leaving Chuck Webb out of your 3-deep RB room is criminal. Also, no way is Dan McCullers in the top 4 DTs.
Chuck Webb was the most talented back that ever played for Tennessee . Hands down . To bad career was cut short with injury , blowout game against pacific . Johnny majors was probably going take him out of the game,
Next offensive possession …

What's yours?

away from home. take too much thinking to put it together.

Best approach to it, IMO, is naming those you've seen play. Difficult to assess someone you never saw. And comparing players over time is impossible. Would John Majors have even gotten on the field to play for anyone in the 90s???? Yet he came in second for the Heisman... Players accomplishments, statistically, from the 60s doesn't come close to what players could do in the 90s. Its just as much how the game has evolved as much as how athletes have evolved. Even 90s to today's players and football has changed so much.

I think Doug Atkins is probably the best player to ever play at Tennessee and could have played in today's game just as good as he did in the 50s.

Long winded way to saying I probably couldn't put one together and certain I would miss players that should be there.

Completely agree. Thats why I limited my choices starting with the Majors coaching era to present.

Bobby Majors punt returner. Has Tennessee record for punts returned for TDs.
Robert Shaw center. All American and Dallas Cowboy 1st round draft choice.
Andy Spiva definitely rates consideration as LB.
