What is your overall opinion of Majors?

Clawson may prove out to be that talented but he had no chance under Fulmer as he was undermined and overruled continuously. I thought Clawson handled himself extremely classy after what he and his family went through in that disasterous season.

I think it's poetic justice that Clawson came out of last year's debacle with a D-1 head coaching job, while The Fired Coach got stuck with a second-rate TV gig.

GREAT player
GOOD coach
BAD role model

Bill Battle and Fulmer were better coaches. Majors was and is an icon at UT. Glad he is back helping the program. When you can not remember the name of, "ugh...that guy...ugh number 34 had a great run and broke some big plays." (ITS REGGIE COBB FOR GOODNEES SAKES)......it's time to move on.

He did coach my Favorite Vol.....Jimmy Streeter!!!!

Battle?? Please tell me you're kidding

He didn't seem like a very likable person IMO. But, I never met the man. Just going on interviews mainly and a few opinions of people that knew him. However, I liked him. He played his heart out for the Big Orange. He coached us back into a very good program. If he wouldn't have had heart problems he would have coached for several more years. He handed Fulmer talent.

I would ahve to say that Fulmer landed most of the talent on those teams. Fulmer could recruit.

I was at Ye Olde Steakhouse after the 1979 Notre Dame game when we won 40 -18. Majors was there, drunk as a skunk and still drinking, banging the table with the Leprechaun's shalalee that some one grabbed when the fans stormed the field and later gave to Majors. One of the finest memories of my college years. I was very drunk too.

This board is called VolNation, not FulmerNation. Nothing he said warrants a ban.

Never said it was FulmerNation. No TRUE Vol would ever "give back" the NC just because of who the coach was. NEVER. I hated the Drunk, but i still cherish the memories of the 85 season.

A tough guy name calling someone names on a message board
Perhaps your hero Fulmer will go to VA and you can become a Cav fan

When will you be at the next Vol game? I'll tell you to your face. PM me with the details.

As an outsider, my take on Majors is this. He coached up great talent and had great teams but for whatever reason, against BAMA he went ultra conservative. I used to scratch my head each year when they played each other during his tenure. I thought that Fulmer did him wrong after he became ill and got him railroaded out. I don't know any details but that was always the perception.

unfortunately JM did most of it to himself. Fulmer just happened to be in the right place and applied a bit of pressure.

I attended UT when Major's was fired. The uproar for him to be fired was much like Fulmer's. His inability to beat Alabama year end and year out ultimately did him in. He was so conservative in his play calling it was almost unbearable to watch at times. I can't tell you how many Vol Calls I heard complaining about "Johnny up the Middle"...

I was happy to see him go at the time...but am happy to see him back with the University again. He's a true VOL and "Gave his all to Tennessee".

When he was hired away from Pitt after winning the n/c every UT fan was excited. My dad passed in 1988 so I guess thats why I liked Majors so much, making the trip to Neyland with him and friends was some of the best years and funniest of my life.He did need to go on the end and they did get rid of him, unlike allowing Fulmer to hang around. I remember on I-40 headed to Knoxville hanging over an interstate bridge, written "Tennessee made a Majors mistake". I am 100% glad he is involved again and loves the Vols again. He seemed to always lose (tie) some of the easiest games, Duke,Rutgers, etc.

A better coach could have won 2 or 3 NCs with the talent we had in the 90s.
That's exactly what I was thinking at the time but I was plugging in "if Spurrier had the talent Tennessee has there would be multiple national title trophys in the case."

Bill Battle, for real? He ran the program that Dickey built into the ground.

Up by a touchdown in the 3rd and going into prevent, dropping two deep. Bama always coming back on a soft defense and pulling it out in the end. Maybe a bit of an exaggeration but you get my point. I do appreciate him and Fulmer for what they did at UT. You know, despite all the differences, they seemed to have similar (conservative) philosophies actually. I take nothing away from either of them but I'm glad we have Lane. He seems a little more liberal to me (football that is) :).

Best college betting advice I ever received was from Majors at Christmas 1971 when he was still at Iowa St. - "Take Nebraska and Oklahoma. Give them all the points they want".

Johnny and the Majors family are Tennessee football. His presence with the current team should help them....With PF gone he can once again be a part of the game and team that he loves....Believe me...I watched him play, coach and now back with the team as the Vol spirit....His drinking was no worse than a lot of previous coaches, Neyland, Wyatt and maybe a few I don't know about...GO VOLS BEAT BAMA

I have to agree that the game was starting to pass him by in the last couple of years of his tenure. As was said earlier, he had some big wins (bowl game against Miami . . . few gave us a chance in that one) and some really inexplicable losses.

Overall, I have good memories of him, except for the long losing streak against Bama. He was the first coach that I fully remember as a kid. I can recall watching the Johny Majors Show on Sunday on the local TV channel out of Chattanooga. I will always associate Coach Majors with my formative years as a Vol fan in the 1980's.

I guess I just don't understand how you could feel negatively about a coach that had just won a National Championship for your team. What more could you want?

I told all my friends the day after we won the NC that I was happy we got it, but its the worst thing that could have ever happened to the program, as we would be stuck with that crappy coach for a long time. Several of my friends gave me props last year, as they all remembered that I said that, because it kind of shocked them at the time. Anyone that knows football, knew that he was an average at best coach, and could see the future.
