What is your definition of success?

Consistent top 10 recruiting and finish in the polls. Frequent top 5 and a chance at a NC with some SEC titles thrown in. SUCCESS!

Hit people in the mouth on defense, flip your hips, don't run the ball on 3rd and 10..

The offensive play calling last year and into the beginning of this year was very sketchy.. made my heart hurt..

So what success look like for us.. imo its closing out games throughout the season.. Not being down 21 before half / or being up 21 and blowing it.. we wont be successful if all of our games keep playing out like this

We should be winning the east at least every other year.. if not more.. it was ours to lose this year and we lost it

Disappointing season: 8-9 wins
Good season: 9-10 wins
9 wins could be disappointing or good depending on circumstances.
Great season: 11-12 wins

I would like to be in the mix for the East every year and make it to Atlanta at least 1 out of 3-4 years.

Win the SEC 1/10 years.

I hope Butch is the man that can lead us to these results. If he can't, I think we should find the coach that can because these are not unrealistic expectations.

SEC East Champs once per 3 years
9+ regular season wins a year
Playoff appearance once per 6 years

There is constant debate here about if Butch has been successful or will ever be successful. So, I thought I would ask you guys to post your definition of ultimate success for UT football and Jones.

Personally, my definition would be to see us the favorites or at least one of the favorites to win the east every year. I would like to see Tennessee making it to Atlanta at the very least once every two to three years. We need to close the gap with bama and become competitive with them on a yearly basis and actually beating them at least half of the time. Tennessee needs to win the SEC at least three to four times in a decade. For me a national championship would just be a cherry on top.

That's my definition. Some may say it's too lofty and unreasonable and others may argue it's not lofty enough. So, tell me your definition.

I tend to agree, but it is hard to stay on top year after year...but they should at least be in the running.

I want to see a disciplined, hard hitting, competitive team that nobody wants to play.

I really think they were in 2015 'cep for a couple 4th quarter collapses. This year not so much, the team was undisciplined and soft.

Maybe Jones got too lax thinking they would play w/ the same intensity as last year...dunno, but seems to be one theory. If he did, it's totally on him...leaders have to lead.

Right. Numbers don't matter as much as context. Beating Florida means nothing if you also lose to Vandy and USC and let Florida have the division.

On a year in, year out basis, the team should:

1. Be competitive and in the hunt for an SEC East title every year. This can mean 9-10 wins or otherwise in the mix for a title down the stretch of every season.
2. Every few years, win the SEC East title.
3. Win 50% of the SECCGs you make it to.

I don't have any "expectations" around the playoff or national titles because I think it is absurd, no matter how good you are, to expect to win national titles. If you win the SEC every so often, you by definition are in the discussion for the playoff, so that takes care of itself.

Also, the further you go down the list, the less hot your seat gets if you fail at one of those objectives. For example, if you fail at #1 over a period of 3-5 years, you almost certainly get fired. If you fail at #2, you probably eventually get fired but you stick around for longer. If you fail at #3, people would get frustrated after a number of years but it would be a difficult decision to fire you.

Ever since Fulmer left it's been an utter joke imo

he was forced out, or he woulda came back to help stiffle some of the ineptitude ala Barry Alvarez up in Wisconsin IMO

or even bill snyder

Can I change mine to this!

Why not add Ga to that every year list too?

Ky and Mo are gimme games from here on out.

Compete with: Bama, LSU
Go at least 50/50 with Florida
Beat Georgia most years

I'll second this one mostly.

No reason not to be a consistent contender in the East so I would bump that to 4 in 10 years.

Should be rotating with FL and GA for that distinction as Vandy, SC, KY, and Mizzou don't have the history or resources of the other schools.

Consistently being in the 8-10 range and competing for the east/SEC championship.

Honestly, to this point he's meet program expectations.

Agree we should be in discussion every year. One could argue that was met the last two years.

Okay with this one - point of debate is going to be when the clock on this one should have started considering the mess Tennessee was in when Jones took over.

This would imply changing the history of this series. The series has been streaks of wins on both sides. It has never been a back and forth series. So when Tennessee finally wins, I expect multiple wins in a row.

Based on your other criteria above, you expect Tennessee to win the SEC every time they make it to the championship game. I would settle winning 50% of the time we make it to the game.

Given that we have only won 6 in the history of the school I tend to view this the same way.

Other things I would add:

- Football team meets APR expectations.
- Football players are good student citizens (e.g. don't want a team full of players that are making the news for activities outside of football)
- Players being drafted to the NFL. Need to restart that streak and not let it end.

How dare you come in here with all of your logic and reasonable expectations.

Nobody rational sees Alabama level success as the goal. They have become a self-sustaining, perpetual motion machine (which started by thinking BIG about a coach).

How much for one of them perpetual motion machines?

(Think those boys might be on to something)
