What is the reason for VolNation's overwhelming confidence?

Yes, our offense looked pretty strong against a good (not great) NC State defense, but our D was inconsistent against a Wolfpack offense effectively shut down by UConn.

And the performance against Georgia State? One of the worst teams to ever appear at Neyland? We didn't dominate and certainly not until our depth proved too much for them. There are legitimate concerns on both sides of the ball.

And now I am reading of "blowing out" a team that we haven't crushed since our current players were in diapers (or were zygotes). The overconfidence is scary. Is it just wishful thinking? Do you think we are really that good? Are you just sick of the expectation of middling performance - what?

I admit the 2012 team has potential, great potential. And this iteration of the Gators may not have the strength of previous years. But until we prove that we can defeat them consistently, i feel that this crowing of our superiority is premature. I need evidence first.

So, then, why do you feel we will dominate the Gators this year?

1. Anybody talking about blowing anything is just somebody talking. It's football season. You're gonna hear/read anything and everything.

2. Why would you find an anonymous person's overconfidence "scary"? I don't get it.

3. We beat GA State. We worked on the things we needed to work on. We played the players we needed to play. Not sure I understand you're point here.

4. If by dominate you mean win the game, I think we win because we have the better team.

5. I guess you need to contact the athletic department for the "evidence" you need. Not sure what to tell you there.

Go Vols

1. Our defense is going to give up yards. Just going to happen. But what it does is makes the offense make a lot of mistakes. With Florida having a young QB, its probably not going to be good for him if we shut down the run game.
2. We did dominate aginst GA State, don't know what you were watching, plus we were not even into it. Our team was looking ahead big time.
3. There's no more trying to run it to impress people, we're going with our strength, no one can slow us down through the air, I'll believe it when it happens.
4. Their RB can't be 100%, their best defense player is out, and I also believe one of their corners are as well.
5. We're the better team. Period.

The last time it was argued that the D will give up yards, but not points was 2009, and we remember how that turned out. I hate hearing that argument. Good teams will exploit that approach.

I think NC State intercepted UConn 3 times and held them to less than 90 yards rushing. Against UConn Glennon was gun shy given the 4 picks he threw against us.

NC State had an entire off season to get ready for us and they came into the game believing. When they got toasted and especially since we went directly at their strengths they were demoralized and while I expect they will continue to bounce back I don't think they'll ever be cocky again. They got that slapped right out of them that Friday night in the dome.

That's the bullet points. I'd add these

6. Tyler Bray learned to check down and throw away.
7. Man Mtn
8. ZR burned Amerson????
9. Rivera shower up at GSU to show he's ready
10. Lathers and Maggit will be playing

When 51-13 is not considered dominating, you lose credibility.

See Vollygirls thread titled...."I dont give a damn" for the best answer.

If the O line can give TB time, it could get ugly. I did have concerns about how wide open the opponent's receivers were at times in both games.

Because UT should beat UF.

But I've heard that line before.

Good post/questions! I have faith in the Orange, but like you, I will believe it when I see it. So many times we have played the Gators while having a better team only to come away in the end with a loss! I don't know if playing the Gators gets in our players head, if it's a jinx or what. I know that we SHOULD win this game...but actually doing it is another thing. Hopefully THIS team can get us over the hurdle and on our way back to the land of Prominence!

The last we had more talent was under fulmer in the early 00s

The zook years produced a couple wins with less talent.

Now we have mucho talent.

And we match up in a way that makes it a lock. IMO ... and i'm a hell of a perceptive evaluator

for me the biggest reason is that CPF isnt there anymore.

Fulmer coached not to lose and caused us to lose half the games we lost against Florida the last decade of his tenure.

We're due! And if everyone's wrong and we choke on it, then it won't be any different than the last 7 years so f-it!

This D isn't even remotely the same as 2009. We will give up points too, I never said we wouldn't But our Offense is good enough to outscore others, because while our D will give up some points, they will aslo give us points.

Sometimes you can just tell when things are lined up.

Outside of the obvious offensive explosiveness...I feel confident with Coach Sal's Defensive knowledge of the game and the nature at which he carries it.

Combination of having looked at the two teams and where they are in development plus evaluations of the first two games played by both teams and their opponents.

No, GSU isn't a very good football team. UT played very vanilla and still beat the dog out of them. OTOH, BGSU probably isn't as far ahead of GSU as you imagine. FCS Eastern Washington beat Idaho 20-3 and statistically dominated them. BGSU beat them 21-13 in a closely contested game.

GSU was never seriously in the game with UT. There was never a sense that the outcome was in doubt. UT tried some things out on D and played alot of guys.

BGSU was in the game with UF until the 4th qtr. The game was very much in doubt until Hammond broke a long one.

You diss NCSU... but they have highly regarded and experienced players. A&M started a Fr QB and their top 3 receivers were Freshmen. NCSU vs A&M would be a VERY even matchup that could go either way.

A&M was never out of the game vs UF. The second half is pretty much what you would expect an experienced D to look like vs an O depending on inexperienced players.

UT handled NCSU. If you watched the game, you know the margin of victory could have very easily been 14+ points greater.

None of this means that UT will win. But that wasn't your question. You asked where the confidence comes from. Here it is.

Why don't all the naysayers go to the corner and start a crying circle and talk about firing Dooley and tell us all how many points we are going to get beat. Some fans would like that talk much better than being optimistic.

This game will be nothing like 2009. The 2009 Florida team had Tebow and a host of other talent. Going into that game no reasonable fan was arguing that we wouldn't give up points. Most were just hoping that we wouldn't get blown out, and were happy when we didn't.

This year, our defense is capable of keeping Florida's office from scoring many points. That combined with the fact that our offense is capable of scoring a lot of points on their defense, is where the confidence that we will win is coming from.
