As I was able to attend four homes games this past season one obvious thing occured to me our fans suck. We have the largest stadium in the SEC but everyone knows we are not the lowdest or by far the most hostile environment to play in. One thing was apparent while I was watching us play the UT fans would sit down and clap like its a tennis match. I never sit down during a UT game and the next day I am unable to speak on account of me raisin hell on the opposition. If you go to Gainesville or Death Valley you cannot hear yourself think but at Tennessee I feel like Im at a nursing home.

The last few seasons are not a good indicator of how loud/hostile Neyland can be..... Hard to be real excited about UT football when we're going 5-7 and 7-5 with a loss in a bowl game......

Well if the fans decide to show, and when we take down Meyer's Criers are we going to have a moving party for the goalpost?

Try sharing your booze with others. You'll be less intoxicated and your UT brethren will sit up and clap with you. Winner Winner chicken dinner.

THIS.
I remember the 2003 UGA game, we were on our feet from the moment the Vols ran thru the T, even thru commercial breaks. There was an "electricity in the air" that "you could cut with a knife" atmosphere, almost unbelievable. And then, the fumble right before the 1st half ended. It was like letting the air out of a balloon, deflating. The second half, we fans tried, but the route was on.

I don't care how big of a fan one may be, it's hard to cheer when there is nothing to cheer for. You try and try hard, but at some point, the team's gotta perform.

Just my humble two cents.

Our problem is the fired coach ran our team into the ground until the fans started becoming apathetic.

I wasnt at that game but I agree. The team has to do something to give the fans something to cheer for. Atleast to get things started. Same thing goes for basketball imho.

I guarantee you if the product on the field increases so will the crowd impact. It's hard to get rowdy and go crazy if you are constantly being let down. I myself try to get up for everygame, but I can see why a 50-60 year old person doesn't want to exert the energy to make noise when we are getting beat by Auburn at home.

If the Florida game is close this year Neyland will be out of control, book it.

Get ready for out of control, da Vols will put an absolute beat down on the Gators this season. Take it to the bank, I will as I'm putting a sack of money on da Vols in Vegas. Once this game starts, it won't even be close, the gators may not even score and I don't see them stopping most anybody in the SEC East this year. To much inexperience on their D along with a missing cog, their former DC coaching UL now. Their D carried them last year, it won't this year and their new offensive starters won't believe the setting they'll enter at Neyland.

Unfortunately it was this. For whatever reason Fulmer never liked guys to be extremely pumped up and ready to play. He wanted them at an even keel, which is good sometimes, but it made for some very boring games against some teams.

I remember against Vandy in 2007 how the crowd was so lifeless that they had already sat back down before the Vols had even gotten to the sidelines after running thru the T.

I know you can't be fired up for every game, but I was at the Memphis game this past year and while the crowd wasn't rowdy by any means, it was alot more active than the last few years of Fulmer's reign.

Part of the reason for that is that I think El Douche did a good job in motivating the team by letting them know against inferior competition that we were going to try and blow them out and not hold back and that made it fun for the players.

Instead of Fulmers banter about "if you told me we could beat Northern Illinois 13-9 and never play the game I would have taken it" type of attitude.

OK, you got me started. I think this is a multi-demensional problem. It is not just football, but basketball as well. Sticking to football, I think there are multiple reasons. One, we've led the way in pampering our fans. At one time, not in our too distant past, we had 98,000 fans packed in the stadium with thousands outside on games as early as Aug and as late as Dec. Then, we increased to 107,000ish and still yet, we had thousands outside trying to find a last minute ticket. As a middle-aged fan, those were the days. Recently, we have several developments that I believe are contributing factors:

1. We won a national championship. The bar is raised. Sorry, success breeds content (sp?).
2. We were less of an underdawg and more recently we are not even competitive in some games. Blown-out is another word.
3. Our bragging rights of having the second largest stadium on campus is no longer there. There is not a battle cry of having a 107,000 standing room only crowd where only the cool people get in.
4. We now have skyboxes, soon to have exclusive concourses, etc. WE are pampering our fans. There are thousands up in the 70-degree, fair weather fans that don't even get to hear the crowd unless they open the window. And they are so far removed from the game they are ineffective as a noise maker. They get to the games early, leave early. Not that at the games it's that big a deal, but they go home and they are like "that game was boring. I'm not going back until the alabama game." I think that buzz is out there and it is infectious.
5. Here goes: We sold our soul for Lane Kiffin. I hated to see Fulmer go and bring in a new regime. I sincerely believe that Fulmer should have stepped down on his own after the 2005 season to allow Cutcliffe to come back as head coach and keep the staff we had. I think the fact that we took a serious nose-dive after that season, one that could have been avoided, and we could have kept people here that want to be here and Fulmer could have gone out sort of on top. Instead, we have a lame-duck coach for several years and the fan base only tolerated so much. Then, when Kiffy came in, it was obvious he's outta here in a few years either by winning and getting the next job or by losing and getting run out of town. Sorta glad we didn't see that one played out. I think now, we are in great hands with Dooley. But, let's face it, he's never even been on campus before a little over a month ago. The orange on him looks as fake as it did on Kiffy. Don't get me wrong, i am 100% behind this guy and he does want to be here a long time. I sincerely believe it is a destination job for him. But, he wasn't born and raised a vol like some of the other coaches we had on staff. And to me, the Johnny Majors years, the Fulmer years, all that building came crashing down in the past few years.

Can we get that attitude back? Yes.
Will we? We are UT. Yes.
Will we next year? Probably not.

BTW, if we can beat Oregon next year, look out! We'll have one heck of a recruiting year.

Sorry.

Ultimately, all of this is about entertainment and the money you have to spend on entertainment. The Vols haven't been that entertaining for a while, until last year.

I wholeheartedly agree with this post. I attended the UCLA game in Neyland and the Chicken Bowl in Atlanta last year. UT fans were eerily quiet in both games. I don’t care what our record is or how bad we are predicted to lose – Vol Fans need to be loud walking into the stadium and even louder when we are on defense. We need to support our team through thick and thin, and anyone giving excuses citing how bad we are shouldn’t be at the game to begin with. I’m sick of all the excuses. Any game is winnable if the team is confident and has the home-field advantage of fan support. If you want to make excuses for our fans not being loud then you belong in the Pac-10 – sitting down with a sun umbrella while you sip on your wheat-germ smoothie!

Apathy is easy when you consistently lose the third game of the year. Winning cures all ills. When UT tops UF you'll see the fan base crank up the noise.

Looks good on paper, doesn't it? It just lacks a little reality....

I have been going to UT games for 35 years and I just turned 40. UT football over the years has become more of a social event rather than a sporting event. More people hang out under the stadium talking with friends, texting, whatever. That didn't happen 15-20 years ago. People wander around like they are in a mall. I raise hell as much as possible but keep it clean b/c I usually bring my 5-yr old son and 8-yr old nephew. I am not oblivious that selling tickets to whomever will buy them is the goal, but yeah, I do wish everyone who is there will be into the game as much as I am.

Too many rich old people telling me to sit down and shut up, so I yell at my TV for free instead of paying top dollar to get in drunk argumens with old fogeys.
