What is Something You Wanted to See but Did Not?

Heath Schuler's name and record stricken from the history books. He left UT with a chance to play for the NC the following year and a probable Heisman. When he went, there was still supposed to be a "hardship" case to be able to leave in 3 years. There was never a hardship with his family. He was one of the first to just go for the $$$$. As far as I am concerned, he is scum and should never be recognized as a Vol. Definitely not a VFL ever!

I haven't been around much lately but have enjoyed your posts for the most part but Heath made the right decision. The risk outweighed the possible reward. If Peyton left after three years I would have been disappointed but would certainly understand.

By the way, I'm a horrible speller myself but if your going to bash Heath Shuler in multiple threads you should at least spell his name correctly.

Go Vols!

Would have felt the same way about Peyton. Sorry but true. One of the things that made Peyton so great at UT is that he did come back showing dedication to the game and the school. Thanks for the spell check, FMP. Go hit up the other guys in the favorite offensive player thread too.

Using your logic EVERY NFL quality player should leave in 3 years. That is pretty ignorant. I love college football and am a so so NFL fan. I hate to see teams build a class for three years and then someone, ESPECIALLY a QB, bolt for the $$$. There were no more risks for SHULER in year 4 than any other year. He could have been great buy choose mediocrity. He is NO VFL.

Obviously your opinion is as good or better than mine, but Shuler was the 3rd overall pick and most pundits at the time (IIRC) pretty much guranteed that he would go top 5. Same for Eric Berry and honestly I don't remember what the experts were saying after Manning's Junior year. I'm not sure how you define quality player but I am in no way arguing that the majority of exceptional players should turn pro after 3 years in college. Those very few exceptional top 5 type Juniors that go pro don't bother me in the least. Had Berry had the knee injury his Senior year that he just had with the Chiefs he may be lucky to be drafted at all. It could happen to anyone. Berry and Shuler are both VFL in my book. Perhaps you're just trolling...if so you got me. Have a good weekend. GBO!

No troll here, ever. Shuler had the potential to make an impact by coming back that no other player that I can remember has had. That is the reason that he pisses me off. Yeah, it was sad to see Berry go, but I personally don't think he was the "program changer" coming back his 4th year that Shuler was. I was in FL at the time and took a lot of S*** when he left, so that didn't help either. I just basically remember him makiing about 50 different excuses for leaving instead of just manning up (no pun intended) and saying that I am going for the $$. The only way that I can describe it is it kinda felt like Kiffin leaving. Not as "betrayed" but similar. Remember too, we have become very used to players leaving after 3 years. We are talking 20 years ago and it just wasn't that common. And no, my opine is my opine and I would dare say that 99.9% of VN shares your feelings on Shuler. I just don't. There are several who list him as a favorite O player. I didn't trash him there, just here.

I was a huge Heath Shuler fan when I was young, so I always wanted him to stay for year 4. I always told myself he would've had a better nfl career with one more year of experience in college. We'll never know.

Meachem not getting hurt before the season in 03. James Banks on the field anywhere in 04. The entire gruop of juniors returning in 02. Even John Henderson, who could have graduated and returned. Brent Schaeffer finish his career here. Clausen starting the 05 season like he finished the Cotton Bowl in 04. Ainge not throwing 2 picks in the last ten minutes of the 07 SEC title game. Fulmer beating Florida one more time. Fulmer retire instead of being fired.
