southern cal runs a variation of six plays and kicks butt every year.
I think you hit the nail on the head. The offense is too complicated for a first year starter to run well. I think a good OC would have simplified the plays. You can always add things later as a QB develops.
UT would have been better off with one offensive formation; 2 WR in an offset I formation. Run 10-12 plays out of that formation and execute them flawlessly. Don't worry about 2 TE sets, G-Gun formations, etc. Simplfy things and do a few things well, not a bunch of things poorly.
