What is it about LSU basketball coaches?

Dale Brown had Shaq, Stanley Roberts, and Chris Jackson on the same team. How do you not win it all?

1989 or 1990 was the year I believe

I just remember not wanting to play LSU at home when Dale Brown was coach. We had a chance at home but down there? Somewhat of a challenge.

I’m very familiar with Brown. He did a lot of “stuff” in his time and was a bit “out there,” but Will Wade is a totally different animal. I truly think Wade has some mental health issues that need to be addressed in addition to ethical issues that have consumed him in his time coaching. I don’t know, but that guy shouldn’t be coaching anywhere in college basketball.
He certainly shouldn’t be leading young men. No way on earth as a parent would I want that man coaching and teaching my son. But money talks

Now that you mention it, his on court behavior reminds me of an Indiana couch from the past.

I went to that ballgame at TBA. Lethal Weapon 3 lit 'em up, Kenny Anderson was my favorite non-UT player, at that time. Dennis Scott and Brian Oliver made the rest of the Trinity. GT also had, Orlando Lightfoot from Chattanooga on that team, iIrc. They made the Final 4, that year.

Michigan St. and another guy I loved back then, Steve Smith beat Cal. St. (I think). They were 2nd round games, winners made the Sweet 16

The first basketball game I ever really watched was a game between LSU and Tennessee in 1989 (may have been 1988). It turned into a 3 point shoot out between Chris Jackson and Allan Houston. If I recall LSU ended up winning but it was fun to watch Chris and Allan trade 3 pointers all game. LSU had some talent on that team, IIRC they had the afore mentioned Chris Jackson as well as Shaquille O'Neal and Stanly Roberts. I remember that Dale Brown was criticized for having all that talent and not doing enough with it.

There was a game where Dale Brown was still arguing with the Refs about a game we won on the last possession. Don DeVoe took the team got on the bus and left for home while Brown was still trying to get time on the clock.

1990. Wade’s first season.

I remember Brown taking a swing at Carlus Groves back in the day. He was a punk, and Wade is right there with him - maybe even moreso.

Maybe I'm having a Mandela Effect moment here because I was quite young but I seem to remember maybe the TV announcers or some commentators later going after Groves for acting like he was going to fight an old man. And even as a kid I was like "Uh...Brown went at him, he still has the right to defend himself even if he outweighs Brown by 100lbs."

I think to coach basketball at LSU you have to be a jerk. Brown, Brady, Wade. And look at Johnny Jones, seemed like a normal guy and recruited great but sucked.

Groves had just fouled Shaq hard and Brown was coming out to "defend" his poor 275LB center. It was reminiscent of Woody Hayes taking a swing at an opposing player.

There's just a spirit over Louisiana. People who knew and covered Wade when he was at Chattanooga hardly recognize the LA Wade they see on TV.

There's also the fact that he's in Baton Rouge, competing with state pols for media attention. Living there, I found Louisianans would forgive public (and private sector) leaders for the most outrageous acts of indiscretion or corruption, as long as they were colorful and clever characters. If you're honest and competent, but dull... people there aren't likely to rally around you.

Figure it this way: in Louisiana, the contents of Hunter Biden's laptop is not a scandal--it's a resume.
Wade's indiscretions didn't start at LSU, though. His cheating ways were very well known while at VCU. LSU just gave him a bigger stage.
