on if Jeremy Pruitt gets fired after the season (I personally think it won't happen, I hope it doesn't happen, and I think it would be a huge mistake), do you think he would be immediately offered another Power 5 head coaching job or would he be relegated back to D-coordinator? Just curious as to what everyone thinks.

Pruitt won't be fired anytime soon.

It's only his third year. Most winning coaches show progress by this year. So, odds are not looking good for Pruitt.

We will see though.

It would depend many factors...a new factor that will now come into play with the new transfer rule expected to be approved in a Jan is how many players he can bring with him...kids tend to like their coach and if he could bring the top 8-10 sophomores/freshmen a power 5 school that needs a complete rebuild might take him...

He could go anywhere as a coordinator. Or he could get a lower power 5 job as head coach... like NCSt, Georgia Tech, Virginia, texas tech, indiana, illinois, etc. A southern school would suit him more.

Will not be fired but if improvement doesn't happen the pressure will be high.

I don't think he would be fired either but the question is would any power 5 school offer him a HC gig?

Pruitt is not getting fired.

Now saying that, I looked back over our schedule under Lane Kiffin, Dooley, Jones, and Pruitt. Here are my thoughts.

I hate to say it, Pruitt's performance looks the worse. A lot more losses to lower tier teams: (Georgia State, BYU, Kentucky, etc.). Pruitt's issue is obviously JG. Pruitt doesn't have a Tyler Bray, Jonathan Crompton, or Josh Dobbs.

Dooley's performance may be a little unfair. He had some decent wins, especially OOC. He caught the SEC when it was brutal. Most of the opponents he played against where in the top 10 (moreso than any of the other coaches on this list). Unfortunately, Dooley NEVER beat them.

Butch Jones had a couple of 9-4 seasons but he really didn't take advantage of the struggles of Florida and Georgia during his era. Both programs were down. Jones beat Georgia 2x but he really should have beaten Florida in 2014, 2015, 2016. Major choke job. Butch Jones had the easiest schedule of all the Tennessee coaches in that he caught a lot of SEC Schools that were down. Interestingly, Butch Jones brightest spots are OOC. He should have beaten Oklahoma in 2015, he beat Northwestern, Nebraska, Iowa, and Virginia Tech. He looks like the best coach since Fulmer but as stated, he had advantages the other coaches didn't have.

Lane Kiffin - In his one season, he has great wins of Georgia and South Carolina but bad losses to Auburn and UCLA (both should have been won). His bowl performance against Virginia Tech was ugly too. However, he got us competitive that season and was a FG away from beating Alabama.

No, I cant think of a SEC coach who gets fired for performance getting another job ASAP.

I know Muschamp got one a couple years later but Orgeron had to wait for a decade. Technically, Nutt wasnt fired from Arky but they werent sad to see him go. Tuberville may be the only one I can think of.

Yeah, UT needs another $8MM buyout. He isn't going anywhere unless he leaves on his own and I don't think Mrs. Pruitt will let that happen.

They just gave him a contract extension. That and if the admin can hang on to BJ for 5 years, and Dooley for however many that was, I think they will ride out JP for longer. I don’t feel like calling it on JP just yet, but he’s not helping his case right now.
Also, isn’t it funny that UT gives extensions and raises right before the coaches take a nose dive? I guess the same is for professional athletes. They get paid and then regress, until next contract year at least when they become superstars.

Not gonna happen.

But theoretically, if he left would a power 5 school hire him? No. He’d probably go to the NFL as a defensive position coach. I’d assume he’d do fairly well in that role too.

We will not get another HC as long as PF stays as AD.
I think the extension was ADPF's golden parachute to stay on a few more years.
It was talked as a couple years project for Phil when he took over.
Most knew better.

I personally hope it doesn’t happen but if he continues to send a certain QB out to play despite the detriment to the team, then I could see it happening.

I think four seasons is pretty much the minimum for a new head coach. There are exceptions, of course. But I think as long as you're seeing some positive signs, it behooves the program to be patient. You can't keep firing coaches every 2 or 3 years and expect to build any momentum.
