At one time I would have considered it a fellow who was stationed overseas or off fighting a war for a couple of years who came home to find his wife had a new baby. That actually happened to my father with his first wife.

It's been a term in football since the 1950s apparently. It supposedly specifically refers to defensive linemen and linebackers. The page was last edited before today.

The phrase may have originated with Harold T. White, a coach at Mississippi's Perkinston Junior College in the 1950s.

That may be true....but doesn't that make it all that much more important that your coach have the ability to outscheme/ outcoach the other sideline, until he has the better players he needs?

And for Pete's sake....we are talking about Kentucky. We have out-recruited them , by a mile, for years. Not sure I would use that excuse for this one. Georgia maybe, but not Kentucky.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure you can coach this mentality into people. You lead by example, but players have to choose to be a "war daddy" or possibly they're born that way.

Some will not admit how bad we have been in the past 10 years and that hiring and firing a new coach every 3-4 years will not improve the situation. Go hide in a cave for the next 3 years and you may be surprised at the team you see when you emerge.

In less than a page this post has turned into Pruitt making an excuse for losing to Kentucky. Lol.

On average, Kentucky has a better team record than we have over the last 8-9 years. Some will not admit how bad we have been in the past 10 years and that hiring and firing a new coach every 3-4 years will not improve the situation. Go hide in a cave for the next 3 years and you may be surprised at the team you see when you emerge.

I referred to the recruiting disparity Kentucky suffers against us, and it's not close. I don't care what the team record, or perceptions is. We have recruited at a far higher level. If the coaches we have had cannot utilize that talent to beat a lesser opponent, then it would seem pretty clear the coaching may be the issue.

IMO opinion, rebuilds will vary depending on several variables. Not every rebuild should be expected to have a 3 yr time limit. Is 7 yrs too long? For us specifically, I freely admit I'm not qualified to answer, but in general I wouldn't rule it out off hand..

It should be an absurd suggestion for anyone in the SEC. I am not talking about a National Championship rebuild...just beating our lessers and competing for the division.
