What is a "NegaVol"?

Most people who are sunshine pumpers remain sunshine pumpers. Most the "negas" are people tired of being let down by TN football, trying to take off the Orange glasses and view things "realistically."

That's offseason and maybe 2-3 days after the games during the season. On Saturday ALL HELL breaks loose on this board. I blame alcohol. Laugh, but there are people posting here that I know have got to be drunk. If they were that dumb sober, they couldn't work a keyboard.

A negavol is a self proclaimed realist that carpet bombs any shred of positivity within the program.

And Craps on every, even slightly, positive thread, example:

New Thread "5* RB Just Committed BOOM!"

Negavol post "He's too tall, will be a bust!"

Success is rarely represented by a smooth, uniform increase in levels of performance or immediate results. When someone continually exploits the ebb and flow of success in the face of a consistent, demonstrable improvement of a program, as a sign of overall failure. You might have yourself a "Negavol.":whistling::)

I think of a Negavol as someone who complains even about the good things.

One of the most common around here is when a top new recruit commits and they start complaining about UT needing an OT or that the numbers won't work out. There's often validity to their concerns but they should just try to enjoy when good things happen.

Back when UT was winning in football the negavols were the ones that got worked up when UT would only beat a bad team by 30 or 40 points. I remember going to a game against a lower tier team in the late '90s and there were people in my section complaining every time UT would punt. They ended up winning by 35 and the game was never in doubt.

My two cents.

When I'm feeling good about a game or a new commitment and someone starts jabbering about what a sunshine pumper I am for not seeing how everything is going to hell?...I get negative. :aggressive:

I guess by definition I'm not a negavol afterall...bummer. I am happy when we win or exceed expectations. I am unhappy when we lose games we shouldn't. I am unhappy when coaches don't perform. I am unhappy when the team gives less than their best effort.

I can't stand the people who will defend the program, coaching (or lack thereof), record, etc like they were defending their child...(see the Dooley supporters) against any possibility of someone who may not 100% totally agree that everything is sunshine and puppy dogs with the program.

I actually found posts from the Dooley timeframe that are 100% VERBATIM the same excuses people are making for Butch. I hope, truly hope, Butch and Co. succeed, but it drives me crazy to hear the same excuses year after year, coach after coach. It is ridiculous. Look up some of the posts from 2010-2012.

I would post the evidence, but I have tried that twice and both times the posts were taken down by some of the mods...not sure what rule I broke, but they made the call and you will just have to trust me or look for yourself.

No doubt however I think the difference is the consistent improvement of performance demonstrated by the team coached under Jones and Staff.

As for now, It feels like our balloon has received a much needed boost with Butch.
With Dooles it felt like he;
Pushed it down,
popped it, drug it around
danced on it (while wearing bright pants)
and dry humped it...
We are not where I want to end up but it looks like we are headed in the right direction again.

If you do research trying to find similar posts to support your negavol position, post it as evidence and then blame mods for taking it down........Ya might be a NegaVol or maybe just paranoid.

A NegaVol is the direct opposite of a "PolyVol" (short for Polyanna Vol). A PolyVol, also known as a "True Vol" is a fanatic ... a person whose enthusiasm or zeal for something is extreme or beyond normal limits. They are incapable of rational thinking, they have no tolerance of others with differing opinions, they constantly utter "we gonna kick they azz" and they annually proclaim that the Vols will trounce Alabama and Florida on their way to a 14-0 season and the National Championship.

I've talked about this in another thread, so I'll be repeating what I said then.

I think the term "Negavol" is misunderstood. It's been used to label people who criticize the team. I believe the people who are the true negavols are the small number of trolls on this board. These are the "fans" who will endlessly criticize the team and coaches when things aren't going well, then refuse to compliment or give credit to the team when things are going well (They even try to reach for the smallest things to be negative about after something good happens). I won't name anyone, but you can look at their post history and you wouldn't find one positive thing about the team.

These are the people who are the real negavols.

Negavol is anyone who does not agree with me on whatever topic is under discussion. :banghead2:
Of course a lot of people on this forum define negavol exactly this way but will never admit it - even to themselves. The upside is that having adults getting emotional and behaving like 10 year olds produces some incredibly funny stuff.

To steal and modify a quote from "True Detective": A negavol considers themselves a realist but in philosophical terms they would be considered a pessimist. That means they aren't very good at parties."

Excellent definition!

I agree and have posted something similar in the past.
The term is used often but their are only a few that meet that definition. But those very few do exactly as you said.
