Ben Bryd headline: "What are Rutgers?"

I was 9.
My dad, myself, and his brother (law professor at Rutgers) went to the game. He still talks about it at family reunions.

beg to differ.
Rutgers. 79
Folks, let's stop invoking the 1979 loss to Rutgers as a loss comparable to the Georgia State loss. Rutgers was 8-3 in 1979. We were 7-5 (with the bowl loss). The only reason that is regarded by some as a shocking loss in retrospect is because we went into the game taking them so very lightly. It was a perfect sandwich game on the schedule. We had played a highly ranked unbeaten Alabama, IIRC, the week before and Notre Dame was the next week. Rutgers was a division one school and was usually a tough out for anyone who played them. We've played them 4 times and have won the other three meetings, but the return game in 1983 in New Jersey was a hard-fought 7-0 win.

they beat Princeton, Holy Cross, Bucknell, and William & Mary. I'd say it's very comparable.

Good post.
Johnny Majors first 6 years! Wow, we would have run him out of town on a rail in year 2 in this day and age! Imagine the message boards if they had existed. It doesn't matter that he wasn't paid millions....everybody is today, but sorta looks like he sucked as a coach at the time!

Good post. Fans need to calm down, settle in and quit slopping in despair. Pruitt and this staff is basically rebuilding from scratch.

It's going to be a long process. Quit despairing and focus on the young guys who flash and hope they turn into the future leaders we need.

Many people are saying "no way a coach would get 6 years today" with the social media climate. I think that is the OPs point. If we didn't live in a "NOW" society, maybe UT could stick with a coach long enough for them to succeed.

Another tidbit on Major's bad losses ... IIRC Major's loss to Army came the game after he upset Notre Dame. Majors had very inconsistent teams up until 1989 when Fulmer became OC.

Well...there is that North Texas game to remember.

Still doesn’t give Pruitt a pass, though.

You use wins by Rutgers to make a point? Just stop while you aren't too far behind.
Yea...... he said 8 wins. Showing those wins were against crap competition. It was as bad a lose as Saturday. Not worse.....as bad

UT was ranked #16 as well
