Johnny Majors first 6 years! Wow, we would have run him out of town on a rail in year 2 in this day and age! Imagine the message boards if they had existed. It doesn't matter that he wasn't paid millions....everybody is today, but sorta looks like he sucked as a coach at the time!

Neither true (run him out), nor comparable. Johnny won a Championship at Pitt before we hired him "home".

Last proven guy we hired.

4 bowls in 6 years with only 2 losing seasons might be pretty nice right about now.

Hah, I grew up in the Major's years. It's just like today. I never knew of UT's winning history because they didn't win anything until 1985. Just saying, but with today's standards it wouldn't matter who he was, we would have wanted him fired. There was just radio and the papers. Back then most of the time you only got to see the coaches show on Sunday. No excuse for this loss, but it is only the first game. We don't have a chance at all if we just want to be negative. Take into account that everybody is better now than back in our glory years. It's going to be a long, slow, road back. If we don't stay with somebody for a long time, then we'll always be rebuilding and waiting for the new coach to get his staff and his players. It can't get much worse than it is, but if we hired Saban tomorrow it would take him 4 years to fix this mess. Bama has always had great talent. It still took him 3 years starting with good talent to begin with. Also, keep in mind that was just through 1982! It was 3 more years before we won the SEC and beat Miami in the Sugar Bowl. We then had a couple of decent years, but lost to Army in 1986 and after winning 10 in 1987, we lost our first 6 games. Tell me nobody on here wouldn't be screaming for him to be fired. We went on to waste
our first shot at a NC by sticking with Henton too long before inserting Andy Kelly at QB after Bama already had us beat. We could have won it all that year and then the next year he really wasted probably the best Vols team to ever take the field with ties to Colorado (eventual NC), Auburn, and a horrible, sickening loss to Bama. We still managed to win the SEC that year at least.

Dont know if anyone told the OP but it is 2019. For better or worse, things work very differently now. Social media, the amount of money involved, transparency in recruiting, everything. Reality is nobody would get 6 years today. 3-4 years is your time frame.

Here we go again, do you not realize that Majors had won a National title at Pitt? Do you not think his success there bought him time here? Stop with this foolishness, you guys did it with Dooley, Jones and now Pruitt.

Well, yeah...that's my point, but it doesn't change the time it takes to build a good team and in an age when everybody is doing it the same way and using every tool available. I don't see how that changes anything at all, there's just more pressure and more input/noise from fans and media. Every coach makes millions just like every coach made peanuts back in the day. If others are already ahead of you, it's just going to take longer and switching coaches every 3 years means we will always suck and we will never get a "real" coach to come as it has become an unstable job or just a retirement stop. Make your money, endure and retire. I wish we had hired a big name coach too. I was looking at this season as a wash anyway because I know how long it takes to build a good team. This was a bad loss, no doubt, but we're stuck with what we have for at least another season after this one. Is that going to be our only excitement??? Every 3 years we have a coaching search and then consternation about who we hired..then optimism, then disappointment? Rinse and repeat?? Majors took forever to start winning and was inconsistent as hell after that. I remember all of it vividly and was glad when Fulmer took the reigns. Would even Manning get 5 or 6 years to see if he could build a winner? I doubt it. Our favorite son would get 4 years tops to win a Natty in today's environment.

I disagree. If Urban Meyer was hired (i dont want that sleaze ball...just using as example), everyone would know the glory days are returning even if it took 5 years. Hope would return in the heart's of the fans

It’s not as easy to bring someone with a NC on their resume from a school these days and it’s rare unless they are in a slump (Jimbo) or went to the NFL (Saban). Regardless, if someone came with a NC I would hope for more than 8 wins after 6 years. Obviously hiring and firing consistently isn’t the answer. At some point we’re going to have to have some stability in order to win at a higher level.

And I can only name 5 teams to win Nattys in that time Frame in the internet age and they were already loaded with talent. OU, UF, Auburn(Cam Newton the freak, coach fired next year), Bama, OSU(I think they did it twice, but again they always had top talent). UGA is close and only took 2 years, but again, they were loaded and already a winner to begin with. Bottom line is coaches who have fast success have talented teams to begin with and recruit more to add to it. I hate to tell you, but that's not us and has never been since Fulmer was fired.
