What In The Hell Happened

Candy? Really? They curb stomped us. Decisively. They are going bowling. We are not. Who's Candy?
A team that beat us last year, and the year before. How many times does it take before you can see how bad these players are? Did the third time do it? I would say not from what you’re posting. Slow learner?

Never thought I'd see the day anyone was longing for Butch Jones recruiting but it was right there on page 2 of this thread. Hard to believe anyone thinks Butch Jones did anything other than gu this team recruiting a bunch of overhyped nobodies. Butches players are quitters. He recruited a bunch of measles for the LOS.

Doesn't exist anymore.

I disagree 82 Vol 83, it does exist. If you’re implying that the team as whole hasn’t demonstrated pride, you are right about probably 25 percent of team (just a guess) Probably same amount in fan base, and growing. I think there are some players that put in the effort, but can’t physically and mentally do what needs to be done on both sides of the ball. They gave up before the half, but a few of them still fought until they saw it was a lost cause.

This staff has been in place since last January and:
--Offensive line is just as bad as they were this time last year. Missed assignments, missed blocks, no effort
--Linebackers are just as bad as they were this time last year. Missed assignments, bad angles, poor tackling, lost in pass coverage.
--Safeties are still lost and non existent with the exception of a few targeting penalties
--Corners are all freshmen and are a little better than last year's group
--WRs still can't get off the line, can't get any separation, and still drop too many passes (#84; why does he get to play)
--There is still no pass rusher on the team
--QB play is just as erratic and inconsistent as it was last year.
--Team still gives very little effort and don't appear to be any stronger than they were last year.
I think this really means they don't have much talent and what talent they have isn't very coachable.

Here is one plausible explanation: players can a) go to Tennessee and play immediately or b) go to one of the 10ish elite programs and work their way onto the field or maybe even be second or third string for three years, save their bodies, ace the combines, and still get drafted relatively highly with a fresh, unmutilated physique. Any young person with a passible IQ and at least one dialed-in parent is going to choose b) every time. We don't have the players, haven't had the players, and won't have the players going forward to win more than 6-7, best case 8 games in any one season. When the playoffs were set at 4, the musical chairs stopped and those on top at the time were virtually assured of staying there. For TN to ever have a chance at a playoff, it would have to be at least 32 teams, if not more. They did exceed my expectation for wins by one, the exact game being Auburn.

Yeah, I probably am right.

I looked at an uninspired Tennessee team today and when the 2019 season starts, I think you will see some current players transfer as this roster is rebuilt.

Probably a very stupid question anyway, I know teams can only sign 25 players, but what happens when a scholarship player transfers, what happens with that scholarship?

We have someone running our football team that has ZERO head coaching experience at ANY level... I see no evidence that he can make competent coaching selections or motivate his players... he'll be back at Bama or another team coaching defense in 3-4 years after a cumulative .500 record at UT...

I'm way too lazy, but somebody should go back and check Vandy and Missouri's recruiting rankings the last three or four years and compare them to our current roster. I'll bet we have more talent (@ least on paper) than both. Maybe it's just the learning curve, but I think coaching is the difference this year.
On paper only

This bunch absolutely did not need to be in a bowl game. It is a mid-level Sunbelt squad playing an SEC schedule.

The staff needs to be freed up to evaluate HS talent night and day - waste minimal time on the Butch holdovers and recruit like mad dogs. Need to load up talent in 2019 and 2020. It is doable - Vol fan base don't roll over and quit. Enjoy the rebuild and basketball season.

Just toss the 2018 team in with 2017 in the garbage bin of lost causes that don't merit further mention on the message board. Vols will get bowl eligible in 2019 and moving forward will be fun to watch once again - after SEC caliber ballplayers are signed and developed.
I admire your faith

Don't you mean "what the Helton?" Offense was miserable this year... hiring Helton was a stupid decision by a head coach who shouldn't be put in the position to make stupid decisions!

I think tis you that is the slow learner. Reread the conversation when you are sober

Very, very dumb post...

Vandy was way more excited about the game yesterday. From before kickoff to the final whistle they could regularly be seen bouncing around on the sidelines. I saw none of that from the Vols. Our guys looked bored. It’s like they expected to lose and just wanted the season to be over.

To this teams fight after Ky? It's one thing to get beat by a better team. It's something else to lay down and play dead.

Pruitt insists on playing man coverage using freshman DB's. Any team with a QB who can throw will have a hay-day when they play UT, no coverage no pressure. The UK QB could not throw strikes and did not try.
