Here is one plausible explanation: players can a) go to Tennessee and play immediately or b) go to one of the 10ish elite programs and work their way onto the field or maybe even be second or third string for three years, save their bodies, ace the combines, and still get drafted relatively highly with a fresh, unmutilated physique. Any young person with a passible IQ and at least one dialed-in parent is going to choose b) every time. We don't have the players, haven't had the players, and won't have the players going forward to win more than 6-7, best case 8 games in any one season. When the playoffs were set at 4, the musical chairs stopped and those on top at the time were virtually assured of staying there. For TN to ever have a chance at a playoff, it would have to be at least 32 teams, if not more. They did exceed my expectation for wins by one, the exact game being Auburn.
