What improvements will we see on OFFENSE?

Everybody knows that our Defense is most likely going to improve, but what about our Offense will be improved?

What should we be concerned about? Don't hear much about the O-line troubles anymore. So that can't be an excuse.

Do we have any excuses this year?

O-line should be good this year. It's starts with Dobbs making the open downfield passes consistently and his receivers getting open.

However, we shouldn't focus the question on the offense just because the defense will most likely improve.

The real question is HOW MUCH will the DEFENSE improve? Because the offense doesn't have to improve much but in order to win a championship the defense has to be really good, meaning more than just minimal improvement.

But what's the point of a having a great Defense if the offense struggles to put up TD's? I think the reasons why we lost a lot of games was because we kept on going 3 and out.

No doubt that EXECUTION needs improved dramatically but seriously friend, championships are won by great defenses. Anything short of great 2nd place.

A 1000 yard WR could land us in the SEC CCG, I think that's what everyone is hoping for IMO.

We'll average 42 points per game. 1st in the SEC.

We'll gain over 7000 yards of total offense en route to a 15-0 record.

3500+ yards passing and 3500+ yards rushing.

We will have 3 1000 yard rushers. Jalen Hurd, Alvin Kamara, and Josh Dobbs.

We will also have 2 1000 yards receivers. Preston Williams and Josh Malone.

We trailed only LSU and AL in rushing yardage and actually had the same YPA as the latter. If anything I'd expect the YPA to be even better this year and maybe even total rushing to increase. I'd be okay with our rushing as long as...

...we get even just a solid nudge better in the passing game. Last season we didn't manage top 5 in the conference in comp%, yards, yards per att, TD's or rating. The YPA at #10 really needs to improve even if we only bump our % up to the low 60's.

Agree on the defense with you and I cannot recall anyone holding us scoreless last season or without scoring a TD. Our SEC West peer UGA went 4 straight games without scoring a TD last season. If we put up 3 and that's it, our defense has to hold the opponent to 2 or less, that's football to me. We didn't have the defensive pieces in place last year to be a championship caliber group. With Shoop and our returned talent I believe we have those pieces this season. Buckle up e'erybody!

Our opponents will Make Dobbs pass the ball this year, at least early to see if our passing game has improved. I would assume they understand we will be able to run the ball so I guess they will line up accordingly. I love the "Bomb" as much as anyone but I am praying we can make 10-15 yard pass plays on a consistent basis, including across the middle from time to time.

Yea but Wolf's Dad, he only had 23 all last season, if we double his catches means roughly doubling his attempts, so who goes dry in our passing game, Smith, Malone, or PW?

Teams will be hard pressed to make us pass. Our running game with Kamara, Hurd, and Dobbs will be hard for most teams to stop. But you are right, teams will be forced to put more players in the box and it should open up the passing game. We should be able to impose our will on most teams we play.

Although your 7000 total offense doesn't match your other numbers, I appreciate the confidence. However, I might be wrong, but when a team has a strong defense and offense, the offense normally has a short field to work with hence the #s are lower because of a strong defense. Now if UT averages starting line of scrimmage is the 10 yard line, which I doubt, that might happen....jmo. That is why I don't like certain statistics in CFB..........more yards doesn't always mean better team.

Before everyone piles on this post, D4H may actually be pretty close. Now 42 a game is unreasonable, but, I am figuring around 33. As far as the passing and rushing; if you figure, as he is, a 15 game slate, then, at 250/200, which this scheme is capable of, you are looking at 3750 passing and 3000 rushing.

Not so sure at the individual stats, but, as a sum, not too far off. The caveat being a 15 game participation.

I cannot believe that I just said D4H may be right...

Our running game will carry us this year no doubt. Same as it was last year and that shouldn't surprise anyone. Our run offense should be better simply off of increased experience but I suspect that we see some wrinkles. It's been aforementioned that people want more I-formation as was shown in the Outback Bowl and I think that will find its way into short yardage situations. I would love to see an I-formation triple option with Kamara, Hurd, and Dobbs on the field at the same time but I don't know if it will ever happen.

Most of our passing success has seem to come off of plays that surprised the defense (i.e. TE's releasing over the middle). Other routes that have seemed to work are comebacks, bubble-screens, and curl outs to our RB's. I'd like to see us add some quick outs, wheel routes, and some crossing routes. I think this will get the ball more into the hands of Byrd and Smith, two guys with the best hands.

Having said this I don't think our offense needs much changing, we have the personnel. Just think a few wrinkles could keep the D guessing.

I hope, as others, that we see more consistency in the down field passing game. But, along with that, I hope that Dobbs keeps the INTs low like last season. That is an overlooked reason we were right at the door in even our losses.
I won't call it luck, but we were blessed to have defenses mishandle a multitude of pics. Three in the Bama game iirc, or we would have been spanked.
I certainly would not want to face our offense this season. Here's why it should improve ...
1. Improved OL and quality depth. Probably will be above avg for SEC.
2. QB with a full season under belt
3. Better experienced talent and speed at WR.
4. Better talent at TE.
5. Even more improved RBs and depth
6. OC and staff comfortable with players.

Multiple talking heads have blamed the lack of longer passes on the WR group last season. They have claimed the players could not get separation and wouldn't fight for the ball like great receivers do. I think it was more confidence by coaches. They don't have to rely on Dobbs to win games with his arm due to the running game. He should have been given more chances to get into a rythym against weaker opponents to prepare for the tougher games in case we ever struggled in games, imho. Shoop will be the biggest difference in the performance on defense! Now we need an offensive Rock Star to put us in the elite position!
