This is an ENORMOUSLY HUGE GIGANTIC what if, but what if we won the national championship this year. Do you think Fulmer would go peacefully into the night, or stick around? If he did stick around, would he still have the amount of pressure as now? I think that IF he were to win another title, he should retire. He deserves to go out on top and not thrown off to the side...

By the way, this is a HUGE what if. In case you didn't get that from above, but I'm sure I'll still get ridiculed.

I remember reading an article that his wife wanted him to retired after the 98 championship. He said he wanted to win another title before he goes, hopefully it's this year or the next.

He'll never win another national championship again. The odds of him winning one this year are beyond remote.

If TN won the NC this year Fulmer would be put his pads on and suit up for another dang year. Fulmer has that same competitive spirit that all the good coaches have, he's not going ANYWHERE until somebody tells him it's time to go. There's NO WAY he would sell himself out and retire. To think so would mean you haven't witnessed him endure a 5-6 season, or talk radio callers calling for his head. The guy is a competitive SOB there's no doubt about that at all. I'm not completely adverse to there someday being a "changing of the guard" but Fulmer ain't leaving until he's forced out.

He didn't retire when we were "on the bottom" so I wouldn't expect him to retire if we were on top.

I think that the largest factor is his wife wanting him to retire back in '98. I think that, after the adversity of the last few years, if he wins a title in the next few years, his dedication to his family could bring a retirement. I don't know him, or his family - so my point probably doesn't mean much. I suppose one could also argue that with his daughter out of the house now, there is less reason to retire than there was in '98. But...there are always grandchildren....
