How will you feel about UT football if we don't hire a top guy that we all want. What if it really is Golden or some other second or third tier guy?

Outside of Urban Meyer at Ohio St and Saban at Bama, what schools have hired a really big name? The timing had to be right for those too. Meyer was retired and Saban realized he wanted to go back to college.

Michigan hired SDSU's coach, when Tressel was hired at OSU it was from a 1-aa school. UF hired a DC, A&M hired a coach from Houston. Top HC's really just don't move around a lot.

I will take about four hours to convince myself that he's the second coming of Vince Lombardi and will win us every championship forever. Then I will closely follow offseason workouts and spring practice, much like every other year. Finally, when next season arrives, I will watch every game either on television or live when I can make it back to Tennessee.

Because I'm a fan of the school, not the coach, and that's what we do.

Simply put, UT can't afford to not hire a top tier coach. Another bad hire and it may take another decade to crawl out of the hole we find ourselves in.

You're right. Other than Spurrier to SC, I can't think of another big splash hire in the past 10 years. It just doesn't happen that often at the college level. Nobody seems to remember the reactions when guys like Richt, Miles, Stoops got their current jobs.

Will be a very bad day for Hart. In his most critical hire as AD, it would have been a SWING and a miss.

Saban? But still not often

Worst case would be a nobody coach who can't recruit well and will bring more apathy to the fan base causing even worse ticket sales next year. I think there is a possibility that will happen.

While maybe not the hire I was hoping for, I will give whoever the new coach is the benifit of the doubt unless and until he proves that he is not the guy for the job.

Only thing we can do, whether that is Gruden or anyone else. Well said. What is the definition of top anyways? No one knows how successful a coach will be. We're only taking educated guesses here.

This is the kind of fan I wish I was. I know it will take more than 4 hours for me to come around. Gonna be a lot of light bulbs getting busted up.
