I was thinking about the downward spiral of the UT football program and whether Fulmer might have "righted the ship" with the right staff/changes and if the state of the program would be better today.

What if, when Cutcliffe left in 2007, what if Fulmer had hired a Trooper Taylor instead of Dave Clawson? Trooper wanted the job. Would Fulmer still have his job today? Would the Tennessee program be in better shape today?

PS. Don't throw rocks. Just a what if...

fulmer prolly had the $$$ to go hire the best oc available ... if he hadn't insisted on hiring subordinates that he could control, he might well still be the coach ...

What if Fulmer chose Dunkin Donuts instead of Krispie Kreme? He'd still be fat.

Trooper would've gotten him fired as well.

What position would we be in now if Fulmer hadn't sold out everything to the devil? Lol

Wouldn't have worked out any better. Fulmer has lost his drive, the recruiting was slipping bad and you can't win without the talent.

We waited too long to pull the trigger, and when we did we got the wrong guy.

What did Fulmer in was the QB position.
He couldn't get Ainge or Crompton on the right track in 05 and 08.
I think they both completed around 50% of their passes.
Ideally you want your QB to be around 65% complete.

I don't think Taylor ever coached the QB, I doubt he would have helped. :twocents:

(1) Chavis and Taylor did NOT get along. From what I understand, Chavis made it well known to Fulmer. You certainly did not want to lose your 14 yr. defensive co ordinator over a gamble on a rookie Offensive Co ordinator.

(2) If Taylor was ready, then why didn't Oklahomo State make him their O.C. or why hasn't Auburn made him their O.C. or better yet, why hasn't any other college hired him away from Auburn to be an O.C.????

(3) I don't know Trooper, nor do I know anyone who does personally know him. However; my instincts tell me that he is not a trustworthy person and will likely divide the team and not unite them.

(4) What sank Fulmer was him losing Rod Gardner to UGA. After he left, our recruiting slowly began to take a dive. Another factor that sank Fulmer, was Cutcliffe leaving. Had Cutcliffe NOT gone to Duke, we likely would have had Terrell Pryor on campus and NOT had
Crompton as our starter.

(5) Fulmers assistants were what saved him on offense, defense and recruiting. Cutcliffe leaves and Sanders takes over. Cutcliffe leaves a second time and Clawson takes over.

No coach could ever help Jonathan Crompton. He was just that bad.

Thank goodness that didnt happen. He was a talented player that abused the system and his peers pay the penalty for his sins.

I agree that the recruiting had slipped. We also lost a lot of players after Fulmer was fired and then also when Kiffen bailed, that certainly didn't help.

Fulmer had a bigger "name/reputation" than Kiffen or Dooley. Maybe he could have pulled more recruits and turned it around. The 2005 and 2008 seasons were horrible, no doubt. 5-7 is unacceptable at Tennessee, but here we are looking at it.

People used to "*****" about "Coacho Ocho" and our 8 win seasons. Now we pray for a 6-6 season with a Toilet Bowl bid.

I'm not saying fire Dooley. I'm not saying firing Fulmer was right or wrong. I'm just sad that Tennessee is irrelevant, both nationally and in the SEC. I'm sad that, like a lot of young people, my nieces and nephews don't remember when Tennessee used to win. Recruits don't remember when Tennessee was "good". Some of the recruits today were 5, 6, 7 years old when Tennessee won the national championship.

It just seems like we're getting further and further away from the "glory" years of the 90's (barring Florida games).

I love the Vols. I don't want us to become Vanderbilt, Kentucky and Ole Miss. I'll always watch the Vols play, but it is becoming more and more painful. I actually got excited when we scored the lone running touchdown. That's kind of sad. I was kind of afraid we would be shut out.

What if the Vols would have signed at least 20-5 star player a year. Would Fulmer have keep his job? What if Kennedy would have canceled his trip to Dallas. How would our country be different? What if Donuts did not have holes. Would they still taste good? the past is the past lets prepare for the future.

With the control freak Fulmer was, do you not think any thing Clawson ran went through Phil.

Wouldn't have changed anything. Fulmer completely lost the football program, and now we're attempting to claw our way out of it.

To this point in time....the only winner remains as the 6 Million Dollar Man.

Give this program some time (1-2 yrs with Dooley)....and all the damage PF did will be a distant memory.

We're more clawing out from the fallout (transfers, early leaving, etc) that comes from having 3 coaches in a 3 year period than anything else
