In the 3-4 defense the linebackers are called Mike (middle) Sam (strong side) and Tim (weak side). I haven't a clue where the names came from.

Actually the weak side is referred to as the Will position. The first letter of the names is the same as the first letter of the positions. these nicknames are used because its alot simpler to refer to the Middle Line Backer as Mike than saying the whole name everytime it is referenced by the coaches, players, etc...

I think we lose too much of his coverage responsibilities moving him to a position that is primarily about stopping the run.

Haha, never heard the weak side backer called Tim. It's pretty simple really. Sam, just a name with an S for Strong Side. Mike has the M for middle, and Will has the W for Weak side. It's not super secret coach speak or anything.

Will=weakside
Sam=strongside
Mike=Middle

thanks guys....that's a new one for me.

This might have just been our team but any time our defense was in a 3-4 or a 4-4 the two inside backers were referred to as Mike and Bill, while the outside linebackers were Will and Sam. Bill may have just been an easy name because any presnap adjustments to the bill backer were signaled in by touching the bill of the hat.

Didn't Kiffin say something about playing more Nickel if we have problems with the Mike this week?

The only way I'd move Berry up is as part of an alignment rotation. Of course, it would involve Jackson having to either man up or play a deep-1.

If nothing else, I'd be interested to see it. The last place I coached had a defensive coordinator who liked to put linebackers as down linemen (interior, not as ends) and occasionally move defensive backs to linebacker.

+1. EB is good but not quite what i would want at mike. just not enough size.

too small and would be smothered and ran over by the OL truckin to the second level. EB needs elbow room and to "box" him in the middle wouldn't be smart.

just a thought.....

with such depth issues and eb playing a hybrid lb position in most respects, i think it would be cool to have our defensive strong suit calling all the shots at the mike position.

Anyone know whats up with Chris Donald and Jerrod Askew? Thought these guys were our LB future
