Schiano was gonna make 3.5 mil. Wtf. Why will we not go out and spend big money on a coach? What were we top 1 or 2 in revenue last year. It doesn't make sense!

Because everyone worth more than $3.5 mil told us to go pack sand. Just like 2012. And 2010.. but it'll be different this time!!

UTAD is a disgrace, that's what happened. Lower expectations, embrace mediocrity, and remember to say thank you when we make a bowl game.

This is not complicated. The big time coach worthy of getting an elite pay check is probably doing just fine...he can pick and choose his situation. Take John Gruden. He's already making what Butch Jones was making doing a part time job without any of the hassle that goes along with coaching college football. He would have to want to leave ESPN. "Backing the Brinks truck" doesn't matter nearly as much as trading in a cushy, comfortable gig for the unknown of being a college football coach.

Take Jimbo Fisher. He had a bad year. Maybe he wants to reset his clock somewhere else. He can pretty much take any job he wants. Everyone involved will pay him what he wants. He has to decide if he wants to leave FSU, or just work the schools over to get a raise at his current job. If he decides to leave, what's a better job, what's the best fit for him, his family and his assistants and their families. Would I blame him for taking, say the TAMU job over the Tennessee job? Not one bit.

The key is, they have to want to leave their current positions, money alone cannot make them.

This whole notion that a boatload of money is all it takes is juvenile.

Yup. It's a gross oversimplification off all the intangibles that go into a top flight coach deciding on his next destination. Right now UT doesn't have those intangibles in the view of potential coaches. Not something more money or a new AD can fix. Much deeper than that.

Vols have struck out on the guys worthy of the big paycheck. Schiano could have worked and had a larger salary pool for assistants. Now look at Neal Brown or a real up and comer and don't over invest. I think at this point I would go with a younger high energy guy as it is a real rebuilding job that any secure coach will run from. Kevin Sumlin could also be worth a look on the rebound. The "Make him say no" crowd seems to think that big money will attract anyone they suggest. It don't work like that.

Florida paying over 6 for Mullen.. Davenport is an academia do-gooder who has a problem with the principal of that kind of money.. She too will find her ass run out of Tennessee soon

And what is it?
We have the facilities, historically strong recruiting, a passionate fan base, so what is this deeper issue?

The administration as a whole doesn't prioritize football anymore, the fan base is not considered passionate by most on the outside, recruiting here is far from easy (although the growth of Mid TN HS FB is changing that), overall the AD is and has been a mess for years. Ask yourself. Is Knoxville a friendly place to move your wife and kids as the HFC in good times and bad?

Great Football Coaches do not want to be told what to do by an AD who’s a puppet for the owner of the Cleveland Browns.

I asked a former AD from a small college this same question tonight and those were his words.

That's a BS number. He was making over $4M at Mississippi State.
