I always thought it was weird to had brought in Helton in the first place. If last years philosophy was strictly Pruitt's and Helton was just a play-caller.. is Pruitt going after a guy that still fits his philosophy still? What fits that?

I don't think he has one or it would be close to whatever he used in HS. One thing is for sure the sooner he can get an OC with a playbook in here the better off UT is gonna be. I get the bad feeling that this matter is gonna slow any progress we are trying to make.

If you ever watched his shows, listen to his press conferences, and interviews he mentions time after time on what he wants done. Controlling the clock on a power running game, short passes, and stretching the field with a verticals passing game. He wants 3 to 5 yards on hand offs, he wants to gain at least 7 to 10 yards on the short passing, and if he can beat you down the field on long passes then fine. In all 12 of his shows, he repeatedly would tell you what he wanted time after time. His pet peeve on running the football is making the 1st guy miss, and then picking up extra yards. Another pet peeve of his is, is that he wants you to fall forward when going down, not backwards. He wants the offensive line to push the pile as the running back is falling forward. If you remember the West Virginia game, we had a drive to last 8 to 9 minutes down the field, then we scored, controlling the clock. This is what he really wants.

It appears to be what Fulmer ran 20 years ago. One the WNML hosts, maybe Will West, said Helton didn't get to run his offense here. Pruitt wanted to grind it out, run the ball and keep the defense off the field.

He's definitely an old school coach. Control the ball, score, rinse, repeat. I think he is a great DC and recruiter. I hope he proves to be a great HC and is here many years. That being said, he will have to evolve IMO regarding his offensive philosophy or else hire a proven OC and let him have full control over that side of the ball. Saban is the most successful CHC ever, with the best players year in and year out, and even they have had to evolve on the offensive side of the ball to remain on top. Coaches unwilling to adapt, don't last. Plenty of proof of that.

I think he implied what Bama has been running. Well, before Tua gave them the ability to look like a Madden video game.

OP: if you have an idea of what you want to do on offense, and want someone who's used to calling other people's plays, Helton does kind of make sense.
I think Pruitt learned it takes certain kind of horses to pull that off, and we are working with ponies. Guess he's now looking for more of a 'work around what you got', type OC.

Have to wonder if that was just because he knew we'd stink this year, so he wanted a high-variance strategy of limiting possessions. Wouldn't make much sense once he gets his players in here and we are regularly more talented than others.

Yup, Les Miles was a long lesson in that.

Does anyone really know what he is looking for on o?

Can't know, but the people he's spoken with for interviews and what he's said to recruits ("3/4 wr sets" said to Henderson, "run a lot" to Cain) all suggests spread attack, maybe more tempo, something like Briles/Yurcich with effective run games, less power, more vertical runs out of spread, rpos, and vertical passes.

But I agree he hasn't really had a philosophy. He just knows what is tough to defend for him and other coordinators right now.
Yeah, that's what I was alluding to in my 1st post. I think he had an idea when he came here but my guess is that has changed with realization of the circumstances.

Seems to be feeling around for styles that work with what we have but adjustable to incoming talent and opposing defensive styles.

I think the O he thought would work is different from what he wants to run now as evidenced by his interviewing of Briles and Yurcich. The Bama power running offense only works if you have the talent.

I think Pruitt wants a varied, versatile O that can keep the D confused and put lots of points on the board.

He wants a tough running game able to push the other team around and wear them out and control the clock to keep our D rested and the other teams O off the field and a controlled passing game to protect the ball.

I think 1 of the reasons that Osovet was brought in was to help starting to incorporate some spread and RPO options into what Pruitts most comfortable with.

That will help us switch back and forth from the tough, control the clock style into a spread/RPO style and then back to the more Pro style and the D never knowing which way we'll come out of a huddle will keep the D lots more confused.

Being able to run both styles will also better allow our OC to play to our current players best abilities.

Wanting to do both styles could be having a effect on our OC search because most OC's have their own style and that's what they want to run all the time.

If we get our O where we can run the Pro and spread/RPO styles and run both well and switch back and forth at will then we'll drive DC's crazy and be very tough to stop and we'll put lots of points on the board too.

Just my guess.

VFL...GBO!!!

I agree, and also think he's pretty smart in regards to self critique. He's also seen Saban adjust and change with the times. The most successful coaches tailor their offenses to their teams talent advantages. I don't know if he'll adjust his philosophies in regards to traditional power run/vertical pass, but think for sure he will always prioritize strong OL and running game...whether that's traditional, or someone like OK St OC who is still very balanced, all while having it look alot different than, say, Bama and UGA. He (and Fulmer) talk about other teams we face being balanced, and how difficult they are to scheme for...so, I think it's pretty easy answer on scheme...just need some one to do the scheming.

Unless there's we're just really striking out, I'm thinking ND OC, Chip Long is making more and more sense. Pruitt knows him well, and he's coached under Norvell, Petrino and Kelly. Maybe can't announce until after playoffs as a deal breaker.
