Does anybody know what a Graduate Assistant is and does and how to get involved with all that stuff? I can't find an answer on the internet that I like.

Usually GA's are young guys, with the exception being Mitch Browning. They do all the dirty work that coaches don't want to do, with I'll add little pay/Graduate Tuition.
Here is a good article you should read USATODAY.com - Long hours, little sleep and loving it

You probably already know this, but they enrolled in the graduate School and are unpaid coaches. You have to be hired by the head coach for the position. They probably get a scholarship as a result, but are unpaid. Good luck.

Ok. I'm a Senior in high school. Should I try to talk to coaches now or wait?

Does not hurt to start the talks now and let people know your desires. I would start looking for mentors and networking myself. I hope you have a football background now. I would also look to major in some type of sports degree. Good luck!

I've loved football my entire life. Just don't have the look. Never got a chance to prove I can play. But I have a coaches mind. So I figure if I can't play, I'll coach. And this seems like the easiest way to get into it.

A good place to start is CoachHuey.com - The X's & O's of Football - Home - I spend time on there all the time, brilliant coaches on there [D-1 coaches, some ex-NFL, authors, state championship coaches]

Pretty hard to get a GA position without playing college football.

Thanks for the site. I'm on there now. I can at least try. It won't hurt. And I have a great understanding of the game, I don't care to do dirty work, etc. I love the game and want to be involved with it however I can.

You'll want to start out as a trainer, and more than likely plan on attending grad school at a smaller place than UT... most of the GA spots go to former players.

Go talk to them. They are going to suggest you work as an equipment manager as an undergraduate and then give you the opportunity to be a grad assistant coach when you become a grad student. Good luck.

1. get a law degree
2. adapt an unhealthy affinity for pirates
3. show creativity in your disciplinary policies

this is sure to get you noticed.

If your not a former player you need to be some type of student assistant(manager/trainer) to have a chance to be a GA.
