"Home run" and "hire" together imply the perfect coach for the job - that there will be no slip ups; in other words, a unicorn because there is no such animal.

It is more the convergence of the right coach, the right staff, the right team, the right schedule and conditions, and the right time. Get lucky and it works; don't and you get a few years of a once successful coach foundering at your school. After you fire him, he may even ride off into the sunset with the sunlight sparking off his NC diamonds won at a different school - a home run hire who wasn't a home run coach at your stop.

Short term celebration of a new hire is insignificant compared to long term success.

A home run hire is a coach that gets unanimous support and no-one would dare to question the hire. Think Meyer at OSU and Harbaugh at Michigan and Jimbo at Tamu

How about a coach that doesn’t have to be built up during yet another “rebuilding” period.

That’s like saying “Welcome to the SEC. Here’s 9 losses”

A guy willing to sign a contract with us. At this point, any hire is a home run.

Other:

I want a head coach who can assemble a quality, competent staff. I want a staff that can coach his position with knowledge and expertise. I want a head coach and staff that can consistently recruit top 10 [preferably top 5] classes each year. I want a head coach and staff the can develop recruits mental and physical abilities so that said recruit performs at his absolute highest ability. I want a head coach and staff that respect and acknowledge follow coaches, players, and fans as well as being respected by follow coaches, players, and fan. I want a head coach and staff that can develop a strategic game plan but be able to change said game plan anytime as the game unfolds. I want a head coach and staff that can immediately identify the opposing team’s weakness then quickly attack said weakness. I want a head and staff that clearly and decisively understand both game and time management. I want a head coach and staff that demonstrates and projects his passion and love for the game, the players, and the fans on a daily basis.

Most importantly, I do not give a damn if this head coach is a “Tennessee Guy” or had previous head coaching experience as long as he can manage and control his staff to accomplish the above tasks.

A coach who WANTS to be at the University of Tennessee, that embraces our culture and demonstrates the potential to bring our football program to the next level of winning championships again.

We all want that kind of success, but everyone thinks there is some mythical common denominator or path that ensures a potential coach will accomplish that end. There isn't, or there would be many many Alabamas and Clemsons in college football instead of a growing number of schools looking for coaches every year.

So a "feel good" coach... got it

All I have seen so far is strike outs and it looks like they are going to have to bunt for a single.

Gundy was probably the only name that legitimately may have had some interest that would have been a home run hire.

I would have put Shaw, Patterson, Peterson, and maybe Jimbo in the home run category as far as other names mentioned.
