What does "Home Run Hire" mean to you?

What does "Home Run Hire" mean to you?

It will take me a second to get the poll up so if you're seeing this without a poll.. just wait a second.

Everyone throws around the word "Home Run Hire" when talking about a coach they like.. but the definition is clearly a little different for everyone. So I want to know what characteristics of a hire make it a Home Run.

- A coach that is universally accepted as elite in the CFB world
- The best possible coach we could get at this point in time, regardless of circumstances
- The best possible coach we could get at this point in time, under current circumstances
- A coach that is uniquely qualified for the Tennessee job, but not necessarily for other jobs
- A coach the entire fan base wants and will support
- Other (explain in comments)

I won't know if we've made a home run hire for at least 2-3 years. None of us will. What most people want when they say they want a home run hire is a name that is going to cause a "drop the mike" moment at the press conference.

Other - Home Run hires at the time of the hire are nothing but speculation. There have been several hires that could be classified as Home Run hires that in a couple of years were anything but. Examples of these are Charlie Strong and Charlie Weis. To me a hire is determined as a Home Run hire or not within the first 2-4 years. I would not have classified Kirby Smart as a Home Run hire when it happened but By George he sure is looking like one right now.

A Home Run hire is a guy that brings a tenacity back to the football program on both sides of the ball, a guy that can connect with the fan base, a guy that embraces what it means to be football at UT, a guy who truly cares for the players through tough love instead of coddling players, a guy who will hold all of the players accountable to a high standard, a guy who can relate to VFL's, a guy who will be able to successfully express all of the above to the media without any cliches or coach speak and mostly a guy who will bring UT football back to competing for championships and truly being feared again.

Will the guy be all of the above and a Home Run hire? Only time will tell.

Jimbo Fisher was the home run hire in this coaching cycle.

Johnny Majors is the only one we've ever managed.

But just because someone isn't a home run doesn't mean they aren't gonna score during the game.

When you get a home run you know you're going around the bases as soon as he takes the job.

There are only 3 or 4 home run coaches out there. They all have jobs at places they can win a NC and despite what everyone thinks, just throwing money at them is t going to make them come.

From what IÂ’ve read Fulmer reached out to a lot of coaches. He personally called them to gauge their interest and they all declined. He then moved onto the next best thing.

Truth is the administration has made this job undesirable for over a decade. Fulmer May be providing some stability and people are willing to talk to him but itÂ’s still not at a point where coaches can trust the environment at TN.

Would there have been any coordinator that you would have considered a HR? In my opinion, this fan base is far too concerned about getting a current HC. Pruitt has rave reviews in nearly every facet you could want. Stop with the whole defeatism attitude.

Someone that can put on the field what looks like a well coached, disciplined team who can compete with anyone. Beat the teams we should and at least stay in the ballgame with the other powerhouse teams.

Going back to Hamilton Tennessee has had a string of "fund raisers" as AD's. Hamilton, Hart and then Currie were not football people. The AD's primary function in Knoxville is to produce a winning football program. The revenue from football funds the rest of the AD's budget. The donations to the University, the numbers of students enrolling, the public perception of the school are all tied directly to the performance of the football team. Fulmer gets that as did Doug Dickey. If indeed you need a snake oil salesman to milk the donor base then get another Currie type guy who looks good in a suit and call him the University VP of Fund Raising and let football people run the AD. It may take a bit but Fulmer will get this thing back on track. The first step is starting another 3 decade run of NEVER losing to Vandy and Kentucky in football. GBO

John Gruden would be a home-run hire...then three years later we'd run him out of Knoxville because he sucks.

But hey, for most homers around here, hiring the guy that everyone else says we can never get is the definition of a home-run hire.
