What does depth mean?

Did you watch the last game?
I thought Wagner played exceptional.
Maybe instead of a depth issue they had the wrong player at that position?
Wagner went the whole game, didn't seem to be a depth issue once you got the right player back there.

Waggner was having to play safety because JJ got kicked off.

He's now been moved back to safety because of an injury.

If Tennessee had, wait for it, depth, they wouldn't have to put Waggner at safety.

I can see a depth issue, where in the 4th quarter the defense is physically tired, especially the run defense. That's where having depth would help. But the secondary? These guys weren't getting burned because they were tired. They do not play well at the start of the game, which is pretty obvious by the fact that the starter, Teague, is probably done as a CB at UT.

Look at the Oline, we couldnt run the ball in the 1st quarter of most games. The Oline is already tired by the 1st quarter? Come on. We aren't running the ball well when they are fresh.

I guess we are parsing terms right now because I wouldn't call a secondary made up of a couple of marginally talented upperclassmen and a bunch of new guys who don't know what they're doing "deep". Alot of players... a good bit of talent... but I wouldn't call them a "deep" unit until they have 8-10 guys who are legitimately ready to play in the SEC.

Right. And the statement that Waggner moving back makes is HUGE. The guy has turned into a VERY good CB. He's a marginal safety... which means there's no one even marginal to put back there right now. He was only able to move to CB because of the development of two new guys to start with.

To me that is by definition a lack of depth.

So what happened the last game, because Waggner was back at CB? Did the depth problem get better after one game?

Depth means being able to can or cancel a scholarship of a player not contributing and having someone at least equal in ability to fill his shoes too.....

A related issue.

One of the ESPN Radio guys today was talking about why so many NFL players & coaches will be tuning in to the LSU-AL game.

Why you ask ?

Because there will be ~70 guys on those two teams that will be playing in the NFL one day.

Now that's Depth.

Depth is when you have enough talented players at each position that you can sub out and give people a breather. Thus maintaining fresh legs and good players through out the entirety of a game.

Don't all football (any sports) fans know this def?!?! In college football, depth means that you recruit at least a top 20 class several years in-a-row. One or two here and there won't get it. There are exceptions, but I'll show you at least 5 NC's in-a-row that proves this.

What is Mark Richt's excuse? He has depth and talent and a mediocre team every year?

good post op. Add that depth also means that the weakness link has 10 others on the field to cover and provide support to. we had before injuries about 3 on the offensive side and two on the defensive side of the ball.....
