I was watching tv, and all i could think about was this week game......and it struck im a VOL JUNKIE.......my whole Sat is based around one game, they way i feel that day depends on the outcome of that days game, I could be in the worst mood ever, but when i see the BIG ORANGE AND WHITE on tv(it could even me a 1 min. segment on espn):cray: im like a kid in a candystore, like a crackhead with the worlds largest rock.....my gf always asks me why do you love this team so much and i tell her their are too many reasons.........I dont know why i am writing this, but i just wanted to be reassured im not the only one. Well Good luck to our boys this week and GOOOOOOO VOLS:rock:

My daughter once asked me, "Mom if you weren't a Vol fan, what would you be?" I said "Ashamed."

My girlfriend never really understood the whole "Tennessee Fan" thing until I took her to a game at Neyland, and she got a whole "Gameday Experience". Since then I have never got a "thats so dumb" or "why do you get so mad". She understands now. We took a trip to the Mecca, she understands.

My wife is a transplant from Wisconsin. She is turning into a big fan now. She actually follows the other SEC games and understands how we can get to a SEC champ game. I couldn't be more proud. She will not buy game day gear unless it is official TN orange. She tailgates, goes to games (even after last season), and watches SEC football other than UT. Teaching her the pure joy of UT is what it means to me. And knowing that if we have kids, we will raise them to continue this tradition after we are gone. Thank you mom and dad for passing on to me such a great tradition. Thank you for sneaking me into games when we didn't have the money. Thank you for buying the TV and cable to see the Vols play every saturday. Thank you for listening to John Ward while the game was on TV. And thank you for buying season tickets while I was flat broke. That is the ultimate vol to me-my parents.

I was thinking:

Tennessee has one of the more unique nicknames.
Tennessee has one of the more unique school colors.
Tennessee has the most recognizable fight songs.
Tennessee has some of the best gameday traditions.
Tennessee has one of the biggest stadiums in the country.
Tennessee has the best looking women in the country.
Tennessee has some of the best BBQ.

What the hell is not to love?

The sense of pride I get when I put on any vol shirt, hat, or wave my vol flag out of my car window as I drive around in Florida. Pulling for them on game day like as if they were my family.
When I come to a game I feel like a little kid getting to go to Disney and never wanting to leave. We really do have a class of fans that is beyond anything ive seen for any team. I am truly proud to be a Vol.

This is an easy question. Being a Vol means that you do not get a strange look from people when you answer, "Free football tickets," to the question, "Why did you choose UT?"

I know the exact set of emotions you speak of. Last Saturday I was as lost as lost could be not having a game to look forward to. My theory about the depth of feeling for the Vols has a lot to do with John Ward. When I was 12 years old I was twisting the tuning knob on my first transistor radio hoping to catch a Beatles song. I'd never thought about the Vols and any loyalty I had to sports in general was tied up in boxing because of Ali, Clay in those days. Anyway, I zipped by a sation and heard just enough of someone who was really excited over something. I backed the tuner up and brought the station in real clear, so I backed it up to see what was going on. It was the Vols; Bob Johnson was the center and Lester McClain was a receiver on fire that day. The game was against Alabama. John Ward used words to paint better pictures than I had ever seen on TV. From that day until now, I have been an ardently avid Vol fan.!!:wavey:

Since I'm not a Tennessee native or a UT alumnus, it's hard to put into words what it means to me. I guess I admire the passion of true Vol fans and I just feel good about myself when I show my friends my orange Vols spirit band.
I caught a lot of ridicule after last year's football season but I took it like a man. I get to be real smug this year and I'm really enjoying myself. Thanks, Vols.

i have been a ut fan since pulling a ut volunteer "card" out of a post tosties cereal box when i was 5 or 6 years old, 49 years and counting. i had family in nashville that helped with the indoctrination by sending articles and filling me with the genl neyland legend. my first memory of college football was a ut bowl game on a black and white set late 1950s and it just took hold. there are more and more vol fans coming out in indiana, personally i think the loss of coach knight at iu and his winning ways led some to look for other allegiances ( just a theory from a coach knigh fanatic), all the things you all mentioned, the checkerboard, big orange, smokey, rocky top, etc. they all add up to a great heritage. i am way too overinvested in the vols, last year was hell, but i wore more orange than any other year just to show my support. go vols, and please dont underestimate bama or spurriers cocks next week. i got physically ill after last years sc game. i said i was overinvested!!

I became a Vol fan when Arkansas was in the old Southwest Conference. This began when the Vols and Hogs got together in the Cotton Bowl during Arkansas's days in the now defunct SWC. Of course, I was cheering for the Razorbacks, but I was both touched and impressed by the treatment my wife and I received by the Vol fans before the game, and after. Nothing but respect and class.

It means cheering for a team that repsects it's opponents - except Alabama, but that's acceptable - and more importantly, respects the game of football.

I've been a Hog fan since I was 6 years old. But even with that, it's hard to cheer against Tennessee.

Go Hogs!
Go Vols!

Born and raised in Knoxville, UT graduate and met my wife there. Tennessee will always be home no matter where my address is, and Tennessee football is one of the most tangible sources of pride I have from my home.

The VOLS are a part of my family and I take disrespect towards them as disrespect towards me.

My screen name pretty much sums it up.
