Jim Chaney. This is my first thread, but I figured I would change it up a bit from the usual. (Crompton sucks, Crompton redeems himself, We want Nick, You are an idiot for wanting Nick, ect.)

What is everyone's thoughts on Chaney's long term plans, if any in Knoxville? He seems like too talented of a football mind to have such a limited role as a coordinator here. From my observations, he hasn't been much more than a glorified offensive line coach who drops a few loud "damn" bombs in practice and is pretty witty with the media.

Do you think he's happy just cashing his checks and staying mostly in the background or does he desire more control over the play calling and gameplanning?

Personally, I hope he is in it for the long haul.

He probably wants to be a head coach, most good coaches want that. He hasn't done enough here to get that job yet. I'll worry about him leaving if/when our offense gets that good.

$$$ talks. Hard to say. No loyalty for TN though. So I think he would be gone with the right offer.

If he was currently too big for this job he would have been unable to accept it when it came up.

I like him, doing a great job with the OL. I bet he is more involved in the game planning and assisting with calling plays than we know. He is Kiffin's eyes in the booth.

This last game was great from Kiffin as far as play calling. I am sure Chaney had a big influence on rolling Crompton out. That all being said Kiffin may consider to let Chaney do play calling if he stays next year, that way it would free Kiffin up to delegate more. I think there would be no drop off and the play calling could be better, Chaney is very good.

I believe that I heard that he worked with Brees and Orton at Purdue. He may also return to the NFL someday.

I think that Jim Chaney will stay long enough to land a head coaching gig. He has a long resume and NFL experience, if our offense can have reasonable success within the next year or two, he should get that offer he likely wants.

Yeah... that's what I'm thinking. I would like to hear what goes on through the headsets. I know the telecommunications guy who does the headsets for the games and he said that during the first scrimmage that they used them this fall, Chaney absolutely raised hell because the headsets were laying in front of the wrong seats in the box.

He went on to say, that he met with kiffin and staff on friday to talk about the headsets for the next day, and it was probably longer than he had ever talked to Fulmer for his entire career (Couple Hours). The new staff was so particular about the different setup that they needed. He said that it was ten times more complex that anything that fulmer ever needed. I think Chaney had a lot to do with that.

This staff certainly brought a lot of the tactics from "The League" with them. I remember George Quarles saying that when he sat down with Fulmer, he was way over his head. I would imagine that the same thing would happen to poor old Fulmer if he sat down with this staff.

I tend to agree, I can see Chaney being groomed for play calling and a true offensive coordinator position. I think one of the reasons why Kiffin is insistent on play calling now is he is setting up the entire program. I am sure he is coaching Chaney up.

Yeah....I'm sure he'd prefer to be the one calling the plays, but the way I look at it, having him as a Co-OC gives us the best of both worlds.

He gives CLK eyes from above and you have two offensive minds going against an opponent. I'm sure he's constantly getting ideas/input from Chaney and probably lets him make the call in a number of cases.

Chaney's track record is one of loyalty, whether or not that applies to this job and Kiffin remains to be seen.

Kiffin appears to be a very good deligator and it looks like Chaney basically runs the offense during practice and probably has a lot of input into game planning and play calling.

Watch Kiffin during a game. He is constantly talking on his headset and studying the play sheet particularly during defensive series. He barely even watches the defense. I think he leans very heavily on Chaney and it appears that Chaney, Cregg and Browning are an outstanding group of offensive coaches, particularly with the o-line.

I would have to say that Chaney has a lot bigger role in the play calling than we think. This is the first year and all of the coaches are just getting comfortable with each other and how they work together. I am sure in the next year or two, Chaney and CLK will be able to almost read each other's minds.

Chaney seems to fly under the radar, but I think he is a huge asset. Everything I have heard from him and about him leads to the conclusion that he is a smart smart dude.

I'm sure he is thrilled to be in Knoxville coaching the Vols. Much better than coaching tight ends for the winless Rams.
