What do you miss?

#1 on the link above... A little story on that. A new neighbor moved in across the street several years ago and I went over to meet him as he was working in the yard. Turned out he was from Buffalo, NY and played football up there at a small college. We started talking football and I told him about John Ward beginning each radio broadcast with "It's football time in Tennessee" as the team was running through the T and it always gave me goosebumps when I heard it. This was in June and when I told him that he looked at me and said "you've got goosebumps right now". Sure enough I had goosebumps just thinking about it...

It always simultaneously pumps me up/ gives me chills when I hear a recording of Ward saying that...

Edit: The Steelers had an old announcer, who retired a few years ago as well (Myron Cope). It just got me thinking how much you tend to identify longstanding radio announcers with your team - they are such an integral part of uniting a nation of fans, in my opinion.

Things I miss about football season (in no particular order):

1. College Gameday
2. 3:30 SEC on CBS games
3. 12:30 LF games
4. Thursday night ESPN games
5. Arriving on campus 6-7+ hours before kick-off and watching the whole area come to life.
6. Watching the team run through the T.
7. Watching UGA losing to anyone and their fans crying in the stands.
8. Classic rivalries.
9. Every game mattering towards the outcome of the season, and not seeding.
10. Big game atmosphere at Neyland
11. Bobby Denton on the PA at Neyland.
12. Watching College Gameday Final at midnight every Saturday.
13. Spending Sun.-Tues. analyzing the past game and Wed-Thurs. analyzing the next game.
14. Beating bama.
15. 107,000 people with one common goal, cheering on the Vols.
16. Bragging when you beat your biggest rival.
17. Crisp fall afternoons at Neyland.
18. Sitting in a down pour to watch UT vs. Marshall
19. Fighting for my 3 inches of seat space with the person next to me.
20. Being told to sit down and not scream so loud by some 114 year old person at a game.
21. Explaining to everyone on Monday why I have no voice.
22. Screaming at the T.V. when the Vols are on the road.
23. John Ward

I am going to try and take his job :p But in all reality, no one is going to be as good as Ward. He was the best, you turned the TV volume down and turned the radio up when UT played on TV

Yeah, but they could have made a better attempt to replace him at least, than hiring Bob Kesling.

Kesling is just a generic play by play guy; he's not really bad or anything, he's just a competent announcer. He doesn't really bring any color to the game. Listening to him is every bit as exciting as watching a score update on ESPN's Gametracker.

But at least Kesling does a reasonable job of letting you know what's going on in the game. As opposed to, say, Larry Munson, Georgia's longtime legendary announcer. He brings nothing BUT color to the game, not really bothering with such little details as the score, who makes a play, how much yardage a play went for etc. The great thing about Ward was not just his style, but the almost militaristic precision he had in describing the action. You certainly knew what was going on when Ward called a game.

(Does anyone in Georgia know if Munson was always this bad? I can see why their fans love him in a Harry Carry sort of way, but now he's just awful at actually calling a football game. I assume he used to be better before he, uh, got old.)

Maybe what Kesling needs is a really good number 2 color guy. Someone who's traditionally knowlegeable about past teams, stats and above all very funny. Kesling comes off to me stoic and boring.

How could you not like Burt B. screaming "MONEY!!!" everytime Lofton hits a shot?
