That's definitely the intent by doing less of it. They've practiced this way for several years now. I don't know how you balance that but not hitting enough probably is why they miss so many tackles..This is not an excuse, but I’m wondering if because we got so thin in the secondary and we were so thin at wideout that we didn’t hit much in fall camp bc we were trying to preserve our guys.
I have been saying this for a while now. Tackling is terrible with this team and has been a problem for a very long time.Maybe practice habits. They do try and go for the kill shot a lot instead of wrapping up..
I don't think finessing your way through this conference is sustainable. Only works for so long til teams pick up on your tendencies.I have been saying this for a while now. Tackling is terrible with this team and has been a problem for a very long time.
One of the criticisms I had when Heupel was hired is his teams just don't have great defenses. They rely on outscoring everyone. It isn't sustainable.
And I think we are seeing that now. I have complained a lot about the defense, but our offense has been mediocre to bad at times this year. Here is a tendency - UT gets a chunk play / or even a play for 10-15 yards. The next play? Automatic mesh play / run up the middle. Wasted play almost every time. Everyone knew it was coming.I don't think finessing your way through this conference is sustainable. Only works for so long til teams pick up on your tendencies.
Or it didn't get much.. The offense definitely needs some tweaking also.. Teams were jumping the running plays a lot.And I think we are seeing that now. Dang I swear I can't understand this. I have a 9-5er and I KNOW what's coming. I wonder if DCs who do it for a living 24x7 do?And I think we are seeing that now. Why doesn’t Tennessee take a Scott Cochran approach to strength and conditioning? This is so basic to successful SEC program. I could be wrong but I get the feeling that serious strength/conditioning is something of an afterthought in the Big Orange clubhouse. It was shocking to see how mismatched they were at the defensive tackle position even in the Syracuse game. It was a glaring issue and I remember watching and talking about how bad it was at the time and how bad the defense would struggle all year.
It's great to have linebackers that can find the ball and be tackling machines, but when you consistently have linebackers with double-digit tackles, it usually means you have poor defensive line play.
The secondary just appeared to not want to tackle at all. Lots of diving and shoulder bumping instead of using your shoulder, wrapping up and running through the opponent.
To me this has to be vital when assessing recruits in their tape and watching them live. If they ain't tackling in high school, most likely they're not going to be tackling in college.
