I wanted to learn more about everyone at Volnation, so I decided we should have this thread.

What do you do for a living? Do you enjoy it? What are the good and bad about your job?

So I won't be a noob, I'll start:

I'm an "account executive" for KNAZ-TV, the local NBC affiliate news station here in Flagstaff. We're the only local station in Flagstaff, and we're sister stations with KPNX-TV in Phoenix, the largest station in the Valley.

Basically, I'm a media consultant who talks to mostly local business about advertising on our station, or if we aren't their target, I help them find the right one. I n most cities, including Knoxville, it's a commission job, but here in Flagstaff, we have our starting salary, and if we bring in revenue over that amount, we get commission.

I enjoy my job overall, but anytime you work in sales, it's quite stressful.

I really like my job because I'm pretty good at it, I enjoy seeing businesses grow beyond their own goals, and I have yet to have a client of mine close down shop. I have my own schedule, which I set at 8-5, but I come and go all day. I drive around town pretty much all day.

I don't like my job all the time because it's freaking sales. I'm not a good salesman, but in this job, to be successful, you don't have to be. Don't let anyone tell you differently.

In most cities, when you have the job I do, you make close to 6 figures, but anyone good in Knoxville will make 6 figures. In Flagstaff, I don't, and I never will.

Next.

OK, I'll play.

I am a contract engineer in the aircraft industry. I do structural design. "My people" are called job shoppers because we do not work directly for the company we are doing the work for (currently Boeing, in my case) but for "job shops" that hire us out. We are not paid a salary but make a good hourly rate plus time and a half overtime. Some people view job shoppers negatively because we have no company loyalty and have a reputation as cash wh0res.

As for the day to day responsibilities, I design aircraft structure using a 3D CAD program called Catia. Sitting at a desk and staring at a computer screen 8+ hours a day can get really old, but I am well compensated and have internet access :)

One of the things I like about being a shopper besides the money is the lack of HR stuff involved with my job. I do not have to do yearly performance reviews where I rate my performance and set improvement goals. If they like my performance OK, they keep paying me.

A downside is the lack of stability. At any moment management can come tap me on the shoulder and tell me to pack up my stuff for no other reason than a "downcycle in manpower needs". The aircraft industry is very cyclical. One reason I am living in the city that I am is there are 3 aircraft companies here, plus the smaller company that I am currently working for, which is a smaller sub-contract type place.

There have been times when I wished I was doing something else. I have tried working outside of aircraft design a few times: Panasonic :yuck:, CTI, and I taught high school in Knoxville for almost 2 years. In the end, what I am doing now offers the most money with the least amount of BS.

I'm a finance director for a telecommunications gear maker. After 29 years I guess you could call it a career. I basically deal with inventory control and other cost accounting details. I have an intelligent group of folks that support me and I'm grateful for that. I have responsibilities in Nogales de Sonora so I get to spend some time in Arizona which is a great change of pace. I also have responsibilities in Ottawa which is a wonderful place with very attractive scenery and a load of beer drinking fools. It's great to go up in August to beat the Texas heat. I also get to work with all levels of employees which is a real good thing as it keeps you out of a vacuum.

What is so bad about that?

In reality, what it boiled down to was utfantilidie trying to smack Tiddy down by proclaiming his (utfan's) son was a super smart golden boy that Tiddy could never hope to live up to.

Tiddy took it much better than I would have.

I wouldn't say I do this for living because I'm pretty sure I won't be doing it forever, but it's my stream of income at the moment...

I work at a local newspaper. I mainly work in the back and do the odd jobs around the place. There is also a printing shop there and I help the old guy who runs the press with the various projects that local businesses order. I get to deliver those things sometimes, as well as delivering the newspapers when they come out (Tuesday evening each week) to stores, businesses, or any other place with a newsstand.

That is why your real job is "Dark Lord of the Volnation."
