What do the Vols bring

on point 2......i don't know that anyone really expects "great" things from this team. I do think most of us are still in the excitment mode of getting into the tourney and having realistic expectations of doing more than winning one game.

that said, i don't think anyone is saying that "just getting in isn't enough" at this point. it's still very much a work in progress. Right now we are probably on a level betwee 25-30 in relation to top programs in the country, and by no means do we consider ourselves an elite type team.

a lot of folks are talking elite 8/possible final four...but i think you'll find most of us are pretty rationale about our expectations at this point for the bball team. the past two years just getting in has been an accomplishment.

for me, i'd like to see us winning the East a little more, maybe the regular season at some point...and past Thursday in the SEC tourney somewhat consistently.

i do like our position in this bracket this year though, and do think sweet 16 is very realistic.

I don't disagree, but its not a matter of expectations. Its a matter of what satisfies you. IMO, the Vols this year have a sense of maturity that they did not have last year, and that is despite their relative youth at a few positions.

UT was a complete surprise last year and they seemed to me to lose their hunger. Maybe they bought in last year to the hype?

This year, they just seem more ... business like to me. This could be a reflection of Pearl's coaching, but no matter. They just seem more focused. I would think that they will not be satisfied with anything less than Sweet Sixteen. From there, its gravy.

that i would agree with 100%. but no one stepped on the court day one, fan or player, and said, "if we don't make the sweet 16 it's been a bad year". that's all i was getting at.

once you're there, and you take in to account how you got there and what you've done to get to this point, there are things that you take in to cosideration that translate in to what a team "should" do. and this team "should" make it to the sweet 16...

I just hope the Vols don't bring any officials with them from the SEC to call their games - if they leave those jerks at home, we may be able to make a little run in the tourney :)

Which leads me to my next question - how, and from where, are the officials assigned to tourney games?

They count. But you can't quanitfy them AND they are highly overrated by John Q. Public.
And highly overrated according to me. If we were talking about the unselfishness that UF exhibits as an entire team, then it matters because it wins, otherwise, it's overrated.

Right on! When a team can take what Dane Bradshaw does individually in terms of leadership and unselfishness, then a team will win tons of games and a few championships.

However, when trying to quantify it on the individual scale, it's impossible. The Derek Jeter effect, if you will.

Intangibles count too, don't they.
yes, but not on the same level as talent and ability. having the "want to" doesn't mean you "will do".

Just like every other trait associated with a particular coach, player etc...so long as the team is winning, people will try to pin it on whatever trait is the most obvious....the demeanor of a coach, whether it be his demonstrative approach to players, refs etc...i.e. Bobby Knight, or his perceived level headedness and cool under pressure approach, i.e. Jim Tressell.

it's all great and good while you're winning, start losing and those same traits that go you accolades earlier on, will then be found as faults and in fact the reason for losing........

such is life....

By the way, one exciting thing about this Tennessee team is that our team defense is far far better than it was at this point last season. Could mean another win for us!

it's better than last year (how could it not be?), but if we're relying on it, we're in trouble.
