What do the top offenses do that TN didn’t do?

HB is a pro set QB with an OC/playcaller who doesn't get the slant. So..... dude be hanging out with the screen or release back as his check down.

So...... dude is screwed if the screen doesn't develop or back gets hung up. Thus, TN is in sack-land or tossing it nowhere.

Ya gotta have a slant or "call back" curl..... built in that at least gets you a fair shot at 3 yards or so. We got nothing, currently, but screens, really.

If HB is our man going forward, we need a pro set OC. If young Salter is our man, we need a more open set from our OC. If we (likely) bring in a transfer..... God knows.

Who couldn't feel good seeing HB and KSalter, utterly opposite QBs, plus a random transfer....... competing for Cheney's wandering eye?

My guess is that we never made a decision on a QB so Chaney needed to have a vanilla offense so all 4 QB could execute them. Then we decided to just play 2 of them with similar skill sets. Then we opened up the offense to cater to those plays.

Alabama is on a different plane of existence this season with 3 legit Heisman candidates. No one is really gonna look like them this season when you put Jones, Smith, and Harris with their O line.

There just isn't anyone other than Gray that popped off the screen as a difference maker for the Vols. There isn't anyone the other team has to scheme around on defense like those Bama guys.

Then you have to scheme around a deficient QB the entire season so play calling was limited. Plus, Cheney has always been good for 2 or 3 head scratching calls a game..

Throw in the usual lack of execution in blocking or running wrong routes or throwing to the other team and you get the mess that was the Vols offense this year.

Last year we were whiffing on blocks and looked confused on passing plays... this year I didn’t really analyze it but we looked really bad for a lot of the year....

Coastal Carolina ran a fake handoff fake option run pass play for a TD. When I saw that I immediately thought that not a single QB on Tennessee's roster could have pulled that off.

We've had good quick running backs. We also need a talented big back that can pound the rock and wear down the defense.

And even worse than not being able to escape pressure and throw on the move he was oftentimes completely unable to sense pressure at all which led to turnovers.

Those guys at liberty and Coastal Carolina were itty bitty compared to our team. I’m not convinced we wouldn’t have beaten either one of those teams. Trey Smith would have been able to block 3 of those dlinemen by himself lol

2020 NCAA Statistics show that the NEW college football game best of the best teams have these offensive stats:

Total Yards per Game: Over 500 yds.

Passing Yards Per Game: 300+ yds.

Rushing Yards per game: 200+ yds.

Total Points per game: 40+ ppg.


Best SEC Defensive stats:

Alabama 19.5 ppg.

Georgia 19.9 ppg.

Texas A&M 21.1 ppg.

Don’t forget that our receivers couldn’t get separation either. That certainly keeps the passing game from being a threat. Only Hyatt showed an ability to get open on occasion.
