What did you have for dinner II?

Kind of a long “what’s for dinner” but I started with a good dinner and ended with some humble pie and a prayer for how thankful I should be.
I Made North Carolina captains platter for a couple of guys from the fire dept who were helping us with chicken chores. Harkers island select oysters, soft shell crab, 21 ct shrimp, 15 ct Sea scallops, and speckled trout fillets all deep fried with corn flour breader served with sweet potato fries and cole slaw and hush pups. Neither guy had ever had scallops or oysters... These are both guys in their early 20s and grew up with single mom raising them. I was kind of incredulous that they had never had good seafood growing up and said something akin to how could you not have. One kid said there were times when his mom couldn’t afford to make French fries or coleslaw much less buy fresh seafood and the other kid so he was about the same.😢 Well I had a moment then I’d never thought of. We didn’t have a lot of money growing up but we would usually make a 1 week trip to the beach in July and I would catch fresh fish shrimp and crabs and mom would Cookem. Just a little reality check to be thankful for some things that others may had not had.

Sounds like those youngsters came up hard. Good on them for choosing to be First Responders. Good on you for putting a spread out for them. Life has a way of reminding you how lucky you are.

With all the rain/snow we have had in the last few weeks the 20 or so laying chickens, a few meat chicks, 15 turkeys and 2 geese have Eaten down to the ground the grass clover, oats, brassica mix, I planted over an acre and water standing was making mud holes. These geese loved it but it’s not good for the others so we had to move 600+ linear feet of electric poultry fencing , 2 shelter/ coops, multiple feeders, etc... and it takes some help. plus we had 1000 lbs of bagged food to move into storage and young backs are good for that! I’ve been having some joint issues so basically the guys helped mrs bag while I was inside. Still took them about 3 hours.
