Curious what Coach Matthews thought. No one’s mentioned him that I can see. Usually someone posts his comments. Did anyone catch his show? What did he say? Do you mind sharing? Thanks!

Same stuff as usual. Said Fulmer has total control of the Atheltic program. Said Fulmer told him before the game that Fulmer believes in Pruitt and Pruitt is the rt man for the job. Said it will take time- recruit, recruit, and recruit.

Said that we are a young team. The team is getting better. We have a six game season, meaning teams we can compete with. Said just need to “get thru the games without injuries” vs teams w more talent -UGA,l and Bama.

I turned it off after thirty minutes.

There are not 6 teams we can play with, there are four.

I put this in another thread

I don’t always find Doug Mathews to be the end all be all but today he made a lot of sense on his Big Orange Sunday show.

He said a HS football coach that he admires a lot coaches at a smaller classification and his approach to games made him look at our situation a little differently.

He said we needed to put the SEC into two classifications. The top one is of course Bama, Ga, Lsu, Auburn, Florida and Texas A&M( I don’t agree with him on this one)

He said the rest go into a smaller classification.

The hs coach told him the only thing he tries to do when playing a upper classification game is just survive the game, play a lot of people for developmental purposes and limit injures.

With that said we are now with the exception of the Bama game ready to play teams in the same Classification and imo it’s really nut cutting time to evaluate this program.

There is no denying the last 7 games have been one of the worst stretches in our programs history.

During that stretch we have been outscored 56-117 going 0-3(I included BYU in our Classification) while also losing a game to a lower classification(Ga State).

We have 6 games left against our “classification”. We simply must see progress there before we have any thoughts or even discussions about ever being in bigger classification.

Miss St, UAB, SC, KY, and Vandy are definitely winnable games. Mizzou, probably not but their starting QB did get hurt. So who knows. Not saying we are going to win all of those games but mathematically, there's still time to salvage this season and make a bowl game. Beating Miss St this week is absolutely crucial though! The remainder of the season depends on it.

He said the Vols are obviously a lower tier program now. Maybe some day they'll close the gap with the elite teams but it will be very difficult. How do you gain on teams with the best players and coaches?

He offered an analogy with high school teams which have no chance in games against top tier teams. They just want to complete games with no major injuries so that they can be competitive with teams at their level.

The Vols are at that level now. Get through the games against Bama, Georgia, Florida, etc. and be competitive against Vandy, KY, S Carolina, M State, and Missouri.

Matthews said ZERO! He babbles on about how he's going to "get into" stuff later, but NEVER does.

This weeks theme... "Recruit, recruit, recruit." End of show.

I said before the season that the Miss State and USCjr games were possibly the two most important games on our schedule. Now I had no idea that we would be in our current situation. I don’t think anyone did, but I still stand with the idea that these 2 games are the most crucial. They are winnable, they’re at home, and it gives us the opportunity to show progress and win some conference games. We have to win these games .

That's just it, I don't think we can beat MS St.
