I don’t always find Doug Mathews to be the end all be all but today he made a lot of sense on his Big Orange Sunday show.

He said a HS football coach that he admires a lot coaches at a smaller classification and his approach to games made him look at our situation a little differently.

He said we needed to put the SEC into two classifications. The top one is of course Bama, Ga, Lsu, Auburn, Florida and Texas A&M( I don’t agree with him on this one)

He said the rest go into a smaller classification.

The hs coach told him the only thing he tries to do when playing a upper classification game is just survive the game, play a lot of people for developmental purposes and limit injures.

With that said we are now with the exception of the Bama game ready to play teams in the same Classification and imo it’s really nut cutting time to evaluate this program.

There is no denying the last 7 games have been one of the worst stretches in our programs history.

During that stretch we have been outscored 56-117 going 0-3(I included BYU in our Classification) while also losing a game to a lower classification(Ga State).

We have 6 games left against our “classification”. We simply must see progress there before we have any thoughts or even discussions about ever being in bigger classification.

Might as well move to the ACC.......to Heck with That!!!!

We can’t skip steps. Sadly we don’t even belong on the field with the big boys right now.

Until we can compete in the ACC as you say we can’t even think about more.

What is it we all tell our kids? The only person who can define who you are is you?

I'd be careful about proclaiming we no longer belong on the field with our supposed biggest rivals. Real careful.

The administration, coaches, and players start acting like we are Vandy. Start talking, practicing, and recruiting like we are Vandy. Guess what... We become Vandy.

But I know plenty of you would keep lowering that bar until you could take some token victory like last night and stop seeing the mess for what it is.

This is not reality ,the SEC is one classification. Was Bama in different classification when Shula was HC and they went through numerous coaches etc..
Times will change Coaches change , Athletic Directors and School administrators change it's all a part of a evolving process. UT is a historically Top 10 program. To say we are in a lower classification can be only be in terms of a year to year basis which sub consciously everyone breaks it down into the haves & have nots anyway by the 5th game yearly. JMO

While I agree with you the op is just suggesting a way to realistically evaluate this program.

Imo if these 6 games vs “our classification” we don’t show improvement it’s not out of the question that a coaching change should be made

Not to mention, what does that mean?

I posted his record based on the definition put in the original post, but was Kentucky at classification in 2018 or above classification? Kentucky won 10 games.

So, I am not a big fan of the classification thing

Basically I was saying this is not rocket science, teams evaluate close to mid season every year. The high school coach that Matthews quoted didn't invent a new concept.
Teams are now focusing on these type scenarios, happens every year

1. We need to go undefeated rest of way to get to final 4 playoff or lose to undefeated SECC as an undefeated foe & hope the cards fall right
2. We can only lose 1 or 2 more to make New Years Bowl
3. We have to beat 4 or 5 teams to make a Bowl
4. we have no logical chance to make a Bowl
