What where some of the signs in the past 4 or 5 years that yall seen that could have shown that this was going to happen to our program? What do you people think? I think it was a bad sign not firing Fulmer after the 2005 season when we were pre ranked 3 and didnt go to a bowl game and imo thats most likely what put us in this position we are in right now.

It happens to every top level program. You have years on top, and years on the bottom. We are not the only team going through it now. Look at the teams that where top of the class in the 90's, us, michigan, washington, nebraska, the U, FSU. We will be back. No one person is to blame for the fall, as will no 1 person be the reason we make it back.

This.

It happens to every team, eventually. Nebraska thought they were immune, and they found out otherwise.

Tennessee has fallen off to mediocrity before. We've always come back. Give DD a few years to recruit, and we'll be back again.

Lack of in state talent, not having a presence in West TN. You can say that Fulmer dropped the ball, and while that's true, it isn't the only thing. What if Patrick Turner comes here? Craig Cooper? Donta Hightower. And Mack Brown isn't really doing much other than being in Texas. If the TSSAA got over itself and stepped into 21st century football, then Tennessee would become a gold mine. It has the programs, it has athletes with potential, somewhere along the line the ball is being dropped, and from every source I hear, it's the TSSAA with the butterhands. Until TN HS football steps up, it's always gonna be an uphill battle. There's a reason that the top football programs are in states with elite talent consistently being churned out.

Did this occur to you just today? And, really, it's not like we're bottom-feeders, ya know.

We can blame whoever we want. Fulmer. Hamilton. Chris Simms. Doesn't matter. The results do not change. Trying to find out where the train got off the track is pointless now. Just get it back on and going full ahead. If you keep looking backward you'll never see where you are supposed to be going.

Agreed, bust unless history is a teacher, you are doomed to repeat your mistakes.

The top 5 reasons in response to the OP's question: Fulmer, Fulmer, Fulmer, Fulmer and Fulmer. He got lazy and complacent. He built a program that looked destined to win 3 national titles after 1998, and then watched his own poor assistant coaching hires, refusal to correct them, and disciplinary problems within the program to slowly tear it apart from the inside.

It is a real shame at how far and how fast he let this unravel.

The downfall started when Bill Battle failed to use Bernard King at tight end, imho.

I remember that 2001 Championship game. LSU won the game on the simplest and most obvious of half time adjustments: switching to a focus on the QB draw to neutralize our dominant defensive tackles and pass rush. The Vols had no answer.

1. Fulmer didn't work as hard after the NC.
2. Inconsistent recruiting. You can't compete in the SEC with recruiting classes ranked outside of the Top 20. There were numerous busts in several classes.
3. Lack of discipline in the program.
4. Players leaving the program. This is our biggest issue currently due to 3 coaches in 3 years.
5. We stopped getting elite talent in the offensive and defensive lines.
6. Loyalty to assistant coaches.

Agree with all. I don't think it was completely on Fulmer but these reasons show, IMO, why it was mostly on him.
