What are your thoughts on Drew Richmond?

He is nowhere near where he should be, considering he was a consensus 5 star recruit, who red-shirted and has had over a yea in a college S & C program, before he even played his first snap. If you're asking for an evaluation as of now (freshman with only 2 games experience, which is stupid IMO), he is a bust. Let's see where he is the start of next season. If he's still getting run over and around then he may indeed be another Blair (a complete wasted scholarship).

I posted after the App St. game that I thought he played like crap. A bunch of you thought otherwise. I think if you go back and watch that game you'll see what I'm talking about. In the VT he was just getting abused. Hopefully in a year or so he'll get better but right now just a pure bust.

:thud:

Tennesseeduke

A simple "he's not playing very well" would've sufficed, imo.

Kendrick is ok, but nothing special. Richmond has a higher upside. Once Chance returns, might rotate Kendrick & Richmond at LT to see which is better on game days.

No doubt you are right about their ceilings.

Richmond just doesn't look ready right now. It doesn't seem to come naturally to him. He looks clumsy and sometimes confused.

OTOH, he looked better when they took Thomas out. Not sure exactly why.... but to me he did.

I think he will likely be a pretty good RT where he has player most of his football carrier. It may take a while to convert to LT.

I think he is learning. He will improve every game, and in a couple of years he will be an all conference selection.

I remember Tiny having issues as well......so, comparatively speaking, he's about as good as anyone at his stage and experience. LT is a very difficult position, you are going up against the best of the best on Saturday.

Drew Richmond? Is he ready? Has he just had a bad couple of games? Just wondering what everyone's thinking right now with how he's played so far. Is he the starter at the end of the season? Thanks for your time I'll "hang up and listen" for little bit. 😊

He hasn't looked great, but as others have pointed out, it always takes a while for all players, especially offensive linemen, to get their feet under them.

Regarding the offensive line in general, however, the thing that I am concerned about is a seeming inability to adjust to the wholesale stunting going on by our opponents so far. It's just not being dealt with, period, as far as I can see, and it just floors me. What gives?

Chemistry and communication to go along with technique.

I remember right after Jones took over that a former UT OL questioned the techniques being taught. I'm not sure if that means anything or has any impact or not. But someone did say it.

Chemistry and communication are hard to describe from a distance but aren't hard to recognize. The OL got better and notably so when Jack Jones was in and when either Thomas or Richmond were out.

Thomas has been loved by the staff and particularly Jones since he arrived. But someone at his experience level should be much better even playing with an injury.

He's young...He'll get better with time and as he adjusts to playing better older players...not worried in the least.

He redshirted last year. LT is a tough position. I think he eventually slides in to play guard and has a decent career. I don't think he'll live up to the hype. I blame part of that on Mahoney.

He's built like a LT and will likely still be a good one. But he doesn't look ready right now.

Some of you guys are overreacting WAY too much. Go back and watch the offensive plays against VT that Freak posted. This is what I saw:

1. Footwork needs improvement on pass blocking. The times he got beat were when the DE speed rushed the edge and he just didn't make it to the point of attack in the backfield. The result was that the end got past him and he disrupted the pass. This happened 3-4 times, and he was pulled from the game for a while after the last time it happened. It appeared to be a technique issue as he was driving his left foot into the ground to slide back, instead of keeping he feet shoulder-width apart (in an athletic stance) and shuffling.

2. Run blocking looked good. He showed me that he is a very capable run blocker. He did this very well from what I saw. Stayed on his blocks and drove the d-lineman until the whistle blew.

3. He can't do it alone. The solution to the line problem does not rest solely on Mr. Richmond's shoulders. Drew obviously isn't the only o-lineman not playing his best right now. Kendrick and Weisman have just looked OK and Thomas and Robertson have looked poor at best. Jack Jones is the only one who has looked good up to this point. Given time Richmond will become a good LT and I think that's where he should stay.

If you have the time, and are seriously worried that he's a bust, compare him to other tackles and see what you think. Here's a play-by-play of the 2015 Alabama vs Ole Miss game. Both LT's are first rounders (Cam Robinson and Laremy Tunsil). You'll see that they make bone-headed mistakes too and hopefully you won't feel so bad. :hi:

Remember some of these same great VN minds moaning about Ole Miss landing a "can't miss" player while we were settling for an out of state 3 star OT who may never play again... Just :victory: short recruiting classes ago.

I'm not too worried. You see the natural athleticism. He just needs to work on his technique and confidence.

Give him time. When "tiny" ,James Stone and the other frosh were being eat up during their freshman year, the last half of the season they did much better.Byyear two and three ,they kicked ass.It is way faster and more sight adjusts than high school. He will be fine

Sometimes I really wonder if I'm watching what everyone else is. There are times when he doesn't even touch the man in front of him. I don't care if you coach that for 15 years, I don't see how you can leave that in the game.

This is a fair point. I saw him get burned badly several times in the V Tech game. During Zach Fulton- James Stone - Tiny Richardson- Jawuan James' years we had to shrug it off bc there wasn't much depth. We had to play our youth. But that shouldn't be the case now with Mosley and Kendrick and even Thomas able to back up at tackle. So is it better that Richmond wait and gain some "football maturity" or is putting his feet in the fire now just as good? I can see both ways on this.
