I was playing golf the other day and a UGA Alumni, Older gentleman, in his late 50’s asked a FSU Fan that was talking about football if he attended FSU or was just a Fan. The guy said, no I didn’t attend FSU and the UGA guy said, ahh, Anyone can be a Fan.

How WRONG is this? Are there many people out there that don’t believe one should be a Fan of a School unless they have attended that school?

went to Vanderbilt undergrad and am in grad school at UGA. like hell i'd ever cheer for either of them (granted I'm a fair-weathered fan when it comes to Vanderbilt and would love for them to make a bowl....someday). That being said, I feel like you do need to have some sort of legitimacy when it comes to being a fan. Having grown up a UT fan and going to games w/ my grandfather for 15 years (first game was ND in 90), hopefully I'd got sufficient legitimacy as a UT fan

Just because they're not an alumni of a particular school doesn't mean they don't pump money into the athletic programs or the school itself. There's plenty folks out there who pay alot thru taxes and various charities to fund their favorite teams. Why shouldn't they be a fan?

Actually, he's right. Anyone can be a fan.

I'll go him one further... the person who looked around and then chose to be a Volunteer fan made a greater committment than the guy who was born to it...

Hey, some of us can't help that we didn't have a choice when it came to being a UT fan :cray:

I feel anyone can be a Fan of a Team without having ties to that school. For example, it starts off small and then works itself into something big. A kid from your hometown high school gets a scholarship and goes to Tennessee. You start watching Tennessee Football in hopes of seeing Jimmy play. Year progresses, you get involved and emotionally cheering on the Vols and the next thing you know you go to a Football game. Experience the Atmosphere and are completely overwhelmed with what it is actually like at Neyland Stadium, now you are completely taken over with Orange, you have an Orange Room, you join Forums and you are a full fledged Tennessee Fan. I don’t think someone like that should be looked down upon for being a Fan.

I love UT. My grandmom went there and dated George Cafago. She took a train to the Rose Bowl. I never went to UT, but consider myself a fan. I have been a fan since I was born. I wish I could have gone to UT, I went to another university on a Golf Scholarship. When I was at that University, I wanted to beat UT in every sport we played them. I still hope that happens, but I will always be a UT fan. You do not have to be a graduate to be a fan. If that was the case, why would Notre Dame have their own TV contract!???????? STUPID ARGUMENT!

the logic that you have to be a graduate to be a fan of a certain team is asinine. some people don't have the opportunity go to ut but still follow the vols religiously and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. if they want to follow the big orange, more power to them.

I was raised in SC as a SC fan. In high school (early 90s) I attended UT band clinics in Knoxville in the summer time for a few years. I also had the priviledge to sit with The Pride at a couple of football games. My bro and I were both hooked. My brother attended UTK and was in The Pride. I was up in Knoxville hanging with him and his friends just about every weekend (he was 1 year older). I had a scholarship to UT but never took advantage of it. Lesson learned. Still, that did it for me. I will always have a place in my heart for SC, but I am a Tennessee fan first and foremost. I am thrilled that my 4-year-old (already been to 1 fb game <'07 Southern Miss> and this year's O&W game, and last night's TN/Furman baseball game) and 6-month-old boys are going to be raised as TN fans, and my wife converted from Clemson. Having been to several Clemson games growing up she couldn't believe the atmosphere in Knoxville. She's a chick. She was easy to switch (no offense).

I'm in the same boat as you.

Seriously though, a kid looks around at all the schools and chooses to root for my Vols?... that's pretty cool.

I'm not trying to come across as cool by your definition but that's why I'm here. I grew up as a fan of another team, another SEC team at that, an yet when it was time to decide on a school I took a visit to UT almost as an accident. Turns out that was enough for me, didn't even visit any of the other schools after that.

That's the thought process of someone who wants to be seen as superior. Completely idiotic, although I've seen Vol fans believe that and openly say so on another forum.

I was a die hard UVA fan growing up and never considered Tennessee growing up in VA, but wanted to go to a big school that was somewhat close. Now, all I think about is Tennessee.

I think wasting our days on a UT message board in mid-may qualifies all of us as UT fans...

I can totally understand being a fan if you didn't attend the college. what i don't understand is if you attended another college in a major conference and not rooting for that college. i.e. the before mentioned vandy grad who is a UT fan.

I grew up a die hard UT fan. I was raised into it by my fathers side of the family. If I happened to go to college at Vandy I would still be a UT fan, it is just a tradition. Maybe it is just a southern thing.

If UT and other schools were concerned about these "sidewalk alumni" you wouldn't see 100K+ football stadiums.

If a school had to rely upon only Alumni coming to a game they would be in a world of hurt.
