What are the possible ...

Bama fans would love to see Butch leave. I've had several tell me they fear Butch in coming years will have UT in position to challenge them every year like Fulmer. They believe injuries spared them a loss to us this year. Sounds about right.

This has to be sarcasm. Trust me, they fear Butch about as much as they feared Dooley.

Are you serious? I live in Alabama and never heard one who doesn't say the exact same thing- Butch is a decent coach but will NEVER will an SEC championship. In fact all my friends (Ole Miss, AU, AL, GA) say the same thing. 'He's not an SEC Championship coach' Everyone!

Well, if "all my friends'" and "everyone!" says it, it must be true, huh? I live in bammer too and not everyone is saying that. Just dumb!

Good grief - I don't know why l even bother on here sometimes.

I don't think he goes unless he is really just over the whole expectation thing at UT. If he does, I seriously doubt the likes of ND would show interest.

I would be surprised if he would take a step back! Doesn't seem like it's in his character, but who knows. Gees, getting to 100 posts is taxing! :)

Those saying they hope butch leaves - what do you think we do if he does? You really think we end up with an upgrade? I don't think you guys are thinking this through.

So you are willing to settle for 2nd tier because trying someone new might not be any better?

Thanks to Butch, the Vols are not the dumpster fire they were 4 years ago. The roster is rebuilt, academics are in order, there are no impending possible NCAA sanctions. We have top 5 facilities in the nation, with and in place to continue improvement.

Coaches will flock to this opportunity this time around. It's a little ironic...Butch made it possible. He is a fantastic caretaker, just not a fantastic coach. He's hit his high water mark....9 wins, historically.

This is the perfect time to move forward, for Butch, and for the University.

"Agent shopping CBJ" is a common negotiating tactic for getting a client a raise and extension. His salary and buyout are going to remove him from consideration for most jobs. Deep pocket schools like LSU, Texas and ND will be looking elsewhere.

Then your friends aren't fans of actual football concepts, schemes, strategies etc maybe? Idk but I know when my friends (Clemson, SC, Michigan and A&M mainly as I'm in SC Michigan and Texas a lot) and I get together they can seen the obvious trajectory of Tennessee. But I reckon there are many fans out there who just want their team to win but don't care about anything else.

If Butch were to leave after this season, which I don't believe for one second he will, nor should he....he would have to take a significant step down to a lower tiered program IMO.

He's done a great job rebuilding the program and making it relevant again and attractive for any legitimate coach who wants to try and tackle an SEC program and have it compete for real championships (SEC and national only please).

That being said, I just don't think he's a championship level coach who has the mindset and intangibles it takes to win at the highest levels. Those guys are pretty rare and difficult to find and I just don't believe Jones is one of them.

What exactly are our expectations of Jones' replacement?

Win MORE than 8-10 games per year. Don't ever lose to teams you ought to beat. Don't lose to Florida. Don't lose to Georgia. At least play on par with Alabama. Keep academics high. Don't let us get on probation. Win the SEC East when the fans expect it. Participate in a top tier bowl every year. Don't let too many players get injured as that reflects on poor S&C. Deal with delusional fans who boo you when you attempt a field goal near halftime. Fill the seats. Look enthusiastic. Don't say anything that could be misinterpreted. Keep all the players happy. And make that all happen now because if you don't, you will be fired.

What coach in their right mind would come to a no-win situation like that? If Jones were to be offered by a top tier school, I wouldn't blame him for leaving.

No way he's leaving this year. It's not financially feasible for lower tier schools to hire him and he's not going to leave all that money on the table here. He'll have a chance to make staff changes and adjustments to position UT for another division title run next year-- and that will be advantageous for all parties.

I've always thought CBJ was a five-year guy. If his growing frustration is any indication, he'll choose to move on to a lower pressure job in an easier conference. The SEC isn't for everyone.

You nailed it IMO. Seriously, the criteria is to never lose. Because after every loss, you will be the worst coach in UT history. We have a truly insufferable segment of our fan base.

And, you better win instyle, too. 1000 yards of offense, 70 points and no punts in every game. And on defense, you better shut out every opponent.

Absurd.

You guys keep talking to the echo chamber if it makes you feel better, but you know nobody has asserted that is the standard.

Every one of those things are the reasons people are giving for why he they would be happy if he left. There's even more reasons which I've not even listed.

What UT expects is no different than any top tier SEC program. Bama, UF, UGA, LSU, Auburn and aTm demand no less-- and likely demand more. UGA and LSU have already jettisoned championship-winning coaches averaging 10 wins a year, and aTm might ditch Sumlin if they can get in on the Herman sweepstakes. It's silly to pretend that UT holds coaches to higher expectations than other SEC schools.

Undefeated, 1000 yards, 70 points....try again.

Like I said, absurd.

Yeah, I'll bet Bama fans are hoping Saban retires after this year so they can snatch Butch away from us before Ohio State comes calling.
