I spoke with several recruits to get a feel for what official visits are like at Tennessee under Josh Heupel's staff for the first month of on-campus recruiting, especially ahead of this weekend.

Fans can get a look inside here:

Later, Tennessee hosts a private players panel. Everyone visiting is shuttled into the team meeting room, and four players take their seats at the front of the room. Then coaches leave.

For the next 45 minutes, parents and recruits pepper them with questions they can answer more honestly without their coaches in the room.

“It’s a lot about what is the coaching staff really like? Are they putting on a front? Is this real, what we’re seeing? Because obviously, recruiting is a business. They have to act a certain way,” Ayomanor said. “So you ask how they act when we’re not around, have there been changes, is the environment changing? Is the program trending up? Players will give you the honest truth.”

Vanderbilt, Clemson, Miami and Michigan are among the schools that do something similar, but the players-only panel isn’t something that happens on every campus.

Your current players make or break a recruiting class. If the players in the locker room are **** taking the coaches and program, you can see that show up in the class.

I think this illustrates a level of confidence by Heupel in his staff and the direction of the program. It’s what I love most about him. He is comfortable in his own skin and isn’t selling a mirage. He has his plan and believes in it. And then let the chips fall where they may.

Thinking about subscribing David. Does the athletic cover all sports or just college football? Also, is it specific to Tennessee or nationwide?
